Sphaerostilbella aureonitens, S. lutea, S. novaezelandiae, and Hypomyces cf. amaurodermatis (Hypocreaceae, Ascomycota) were collected from Japan, and the pure cultures were obtained from each species. Their detailed morphological characteristics were then ascertained. Sphaerostilbella novaezelandiae and H. cf. amaurodermatis were newly added to the Japanese mycobiota.
The present study reports the identification of a newly recorded species, Gymnopilus decipiens, in Japan, along with a description and illustration of its morphological characteristics (based on a specimen collected from Hokkaido). The G. decipiens specimen collected from Hokkaido is characterized by its close proximity to fumaroles, which discharge highlyheated steam and volcanic gas, and its small basidiomata and mild taste. Maximum parsimony analysis of the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region revealed that Japanese and Russian (Yakutsk) samples of G. decipiens possess identical ITS sequences, suggesting that G. decipiens is widely distributed throughout the subarctic region, including Siberia and Hokkaido.
