The effect of an inpatient based intensive multidisciplinary treatment on gross motor function was evaluated by Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) in sixty children with cerebral palsy. The mean age at admission was four years and the mean period in hospital was four months. Mean GMFM total score was 33.1% at admission and 41.0% at discharge. The GMFM total score of most of the children increased beyond the trend of the natural developmental curve of children with cerebral palsy, and an improvement of gross motor function was found until the children reached 10 years of age. The GMFM total score was changed from 76.1% to 85.1% in three children with level 2 GMFCS, from 50.3% to 60.9% in twenty-nine children with level 3, 16.7% to 24.1% in sixteen children with level 4, and from 2.8% to 4.4% in twelve children with level 5. The GMFM total score of forty-one children who stayed in hospital without their mothers changed from 43.2% to 52% and the GMFM total score of nineteen children who stayed in hospital with their mothers changed from 11.1% to 15.9%. In the forty-one children who stayed in hospital without their mothers, the GMFM total score of twenty-six operated children changed from 48.2% to 58.8% and the GMFM total score of fifteen non-operated children changed from 34.6% to 42.0%. The operated group was not significantly different in the pattern of gross motor improvement from the nonoperated group.
