We examined the utility of the echo-guided axillary approach to brachial plexus block (B.P.B.) in 50 consecutive patients undergoing surgery of the forearm and hand. The success rate of complete sensory blockage of radial, ulnar, medial, antebrachial and mus-culocutaneousnerve was 90%, 96%, 94%, 98%, and 70% respectively. These results were comparable to those when using the nerve stimulator technique, which has become more popular in recent years. With the echo-guided axillary approach, side effects can also be avoided such as nerve injury and intravascular injection associated with B.P.B. because it can be performed visually. We conclude the echo-guided method is a safe and useful technique for the B.P.B. at axilla.
