We elucidated initial and annual changes in clinical symptoms after the onset of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) according to sex and age at onset.
The observed (initial) frequencies of bleeding symptoms within a year after onset were the same as those of previous reports. The most frequent symptom was purpura, nasal bleeding and gingival bleeding when the patient was below 15 years of age, but gingival bleeding was more frequent than nasal bleeding at over 15 years of age. The third most frequent initial bleeding symptom was hypermenorrea in 15 - 39-year-old women and bloody stools in men aged 65-years and above.
The proportion of patients with symptoms (purpura, gingival and nasal bleeding) was highest at onset, and decreased to less than the half in 2 - 4 years, and stabilized from 4 - 5 years and thereafter. These clinical courses after onset were essentially consistent at all ages and sex.
We thus defined the clinical course of ITP for the first time.
