We reviewed research studies on the functional vision score (FVS). The research contents were divided into three categories: (1) validation of the FVS-related index, (2) evaluation of visual function using the FVS, and (3) the relationship between the FVS and other health indicators. We found that the FVS (1) could be used to quantify the visual function into one score, (2) had a high intrarater/interrater reliability, (3) was highly associated with vision-related quality of life, (4) was easily understood by people other than medical staff such as patients’ family members, and (5) was useful for standard of physical disability certificate.
