We have studied and developed the walking assist device with the power assist for outdoors walking. But we are planning the new device for the outdoors and indoors walking. At first, we changed the 3 wheels device from 4 wheel one for the size down. We should supply the device which can pass through the narrow passages such as the area of the home or the shop. Recently, using the walking assist device at the care support facility is increasing, to replace the wheel chair. Secondly., we tried to simplify the functions of the device and added to extend the variations of specification.

This paper describes the method to display the tool trajectory using augmented reality techniques. First, the paper overviews the prototype of a computer controlled dental milling machine (DMM) under development of this study. The paper shows how to use DMM in dental treatment, covering its basic functions such as joystick-based control, NC code-based control, manipulation recording, and replay operation for the manual manipulation. Then the paper presents superimpose of trajectory of cutting tool path and virtual objects over the physical model using the mixed-reality techniques. The discussion and future direction will be followed.

In order to make industrial products that fit the human body, the intuitive evaluation method is necessary. The virtual reality technology has been used for intuitive evaluation in various fields. For the developers of such products, simultaneous utilization of the virtual reality system would be potential demand, because the sensitivity in individuals and the exchanges of opinions with other people are important. Therefore, we proposed a virtual reality system which can be manipulated simultaneously by multi-users by using the GUI interface of tablet PCs and the centered large screen. By using this proposed method, we developed the deformation analysis system of the human hand shape using the finite element method for the multiple users.

Because the plant is a complex system, modularization of its design is an effective strategy to reduce the complexity. Modularization divides the development of the complex plant into the development of individual modules through the determination and standardization of inputs and outputs. Modular development allows modular-level design evaluation, performance optimization, and a guarantee of module quality. System development can then be divided among the individual modules that are used in combination. A change in the division lines between the modules has a large impact on the quality and package density of the module as well as on the inputs and outputs of the modules. These impacts make the modular division problem not only important to solve but also difficult to solve. This paper proposes a computer algorithm and division system to address the modular division problem of the complex plant system. The algorithm enables the designer to achieve high functional independence between modules, and to reduce the complexity of the entire plant system. In order to realize the modularization method, this paper addresses the following three methodologies for a formalization of the modular division problem: (1) a network representation model of the system diagram, (2) a description method of the propulsion system as a superimposed network of system diagrams, and (3) a division and evaluation method of the superimposed network as a modularization of the plant system. A prototype system is implemented on the basis of the formalized modular division method and is applied to the design example of the modularization of the plant system. The design result shows modular division plans that have high functional independence and are easy to combine with each other.

This paper describes a new system for a shell plate forming which is usually regarded as a special skill in a ship yard. The system has a characteristic to support a workman be engaged in shell plate forming by indicating the logical way where to perform a press or heating. This system shows a good performance for a time consuming and an accuracy of forming, after has been introduced by a one of the major Japanese shipyard. Also, this paper describes an application of the system to other works for a ship construction.

The Japanese ocean area of about 4,470,000km^2 is the sixth in the world. Therefore, it is newly necessary to establish an appropriate transportation other than a ship to utilize the Japanese ocean effectively. In addition ultra light seaplanes are attracting attention recently from the viewpoint of natural environmental protection. Accordingly the JRPS is now developing FRP float for these planes. In this paper, we simulate the behavior at landing of the seaplane by using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method which is one of the functions in PAM-CRASH and are able to show the tendency of the vertical acceleration change in the float part for the first step in deriving a crash force from analytical data.

In designing a plastic bottle, a quantitative evaluation is needed for time crunch. In this study, we assumed that a plastic bottle could be evaluated by the load that the user felt. We analyzed motions in using a 2L plastic bottle and confirmed that the user felt a large load in lifting and inclining the bottle. We indicated a connection between myogenic potential and subjective evaluation in each basic motion. In order to evaluate the physical workload, we proposed the method by measuring myogenic potential. We evaluated mockups by the method and indicated to reduce the load by installing the inclination on short side of the bottle.

Recently, we have the opportunity to shop for something on the computer display connected with the Internet. However, it is often said that the product arrived at the home is something different from it indicated on the computer display. We have studied about the shape evaluation in virtual space and in real space. And it is indicated that the shape evaluation in virtual space is difference from it in real space, especially, in case of product which has the complex contour. In this research, we are focusing on the complexity of contour. The complexity is defined by mathematical methods, for example, Hurst exponent in fractal geometry. In this paper, we confirm that the mathematical complexity is equal to the complexity which people feel by sensory evaluation. The result shows that Hurst exponent almost can show the complexity which people feel, however, it is difficult in case of the products which has cyclic contour.

We have already developed an embodied virtual communication system for human interaction analysis by synthesis. This system provides two remote talkers with a communication environment in which embodied interaction is shared by VirtualActors including the talkers themselves through a virtual face-to-face scene. We confirmed the importance of embodied sharing in embodied communication by using the system. We have also demonstrated the effects of nodding responses for embodied interaction and communication support. In this paper, we develop a virtual communication support system using a speech-driven embodied entrainment wall picture focusing on the immersive effect which makes an impression visually. The effectiveness of the system is demonstrated by the sensory evaluation and speech-overlap analysis in the communication experiment for 20 pairs of 40 talkers.

Escalators run by chain drive, and the chain, which is wound up as a polygon inscribed in the sprocket, causes speed pulsation due to its geometric motion on the sprocket. The fewer the number of teeth on the sprocket is, the larger the speed pulsation is. It is obvious that the number of teeth decreases, in the case of smaller diameter of the sprocket for space reduction or the case of larger length of the chain link to reduce the link number for cost reduction. Therefore, the above cases induce large pulsation for the chain speed, which affects the ride comfort significantly. In this paper, a new drive mechanism is proposed to suppress the speed pulsation. The proposed method applies an additional fixed rail, which can achieve optimal trajectory against the chain roller to reduce vibration. The mechanical design of the new system is investigated by kinematics analysis and experiment results with prototype shows its validity.

The shortening of development period with keeping product quality of an air-conditioning system is important issue to adopt diversified and changeable market. The control software which combines elements of the air-conditioning system has a close relationship with rework in the later development stage. To improve the control software development process, Toshiba has developed a simulation based testing platform for control software of the air-conditioning system using hybrid system modeling language DCML^<TM> (Dynamic Constraint Modeling Language). This paper clarifies the criteria of the control software, the goal of the testing platform, building steps of simulation based testing platform. And this paper reports an experience on applying the building steps to a trial environment of the testing platform.

The manufacturing equipment is one of the mechatronics equipment composed of the mechanical hardware, electrical hardware and control software. Previously, it was necessary to complete the hardware of equipment prior starting to debug the control software. In order to develop the manufacturing equipment more efficiently and quickly, we have established virtual hardware system which enables us to debug the control software without real hardware. This system has already been applied for 21 equipment models and reduced the software verification time by 60%.

For the development of high-functional and differentiated products, it is becoming necessary to the best design process that across the domains; electrical, mechanical and software specialties. However, at present, in the process of embedded software development, the developers often revise the software codes and repeat inefficient efforts because that they don't understand the original requirements and previous designing intentions exactly. The authors predict that the mechanical designers in previous processes, don't describe the reasons, how to analyze and why to adoption technologies insufficiently. In this paper, the authors suggest that the Requirement Model should be introduced in development process for all designers can understand "what to make" precisely. In reference of the studies of various requirement definitions, especially object-oriented approach, the authors studied that the procedure of description in the Requirement Model, which is suitable for the development of high-functional and well-integrated products. And the authors examined the possibilities of description using SysML for the Requirement Model in sample modeling the intelligent crane system.

OMG SysML^<TM> defines a modeling language, which is based on UML, for specifying and designing complex systems. It helps a team consisting of systems engineers and domain engineers to share various kind of knowledge with little ambiguity. In addition, its definiteness also enable us to create software tools for verifying system models in a relatively generic manner. This paper discusses several types of model verifications that seem effective in eliminating problems in a system model at earlier stages of system development, and also provides a brief introduction of their prototype implementations.

Semiconductors that brings about advanced information society, was made its performance to improve by miniaturization. However semiconductors, as a product system, is reaching near-term economic and physical limitations. And 3D integration, such as 3D-SiP, is expected as the break through. But traditional design method based on only scaling rule can't apply to this. Therefore it is difficult to decide the development direction of the next generation semiconductor device in early phase of system LSI design. In addition, design method based on design rule has various problems. So we need to construct design method for system LSI. As a solution for these problems, we build up a parametric model and a workflow for proper system LSI structure including 3D-SiP. As a result, we get the proper structure of next generation semiconductor device by using the parametric model and workflow.

Recently, amount of the information required for factory management and operation has increased. For this problem, actions have been taken: active gathering of facility information, integration of production, diagnostics, and maintenance by interoperability of the facility information, standardization of data format concerning to the facility information. However, utilization of the information and data is not adequately considered. This paper, as a way of the data utilization, discusses the facility management system which effectively applies results of facility diagnostics to maintenance of other facilities. Mechanism design becomes more and more complicated to achieve higher mechanical function and efficiency. It is necessary to produce good configuration and geometry at the upstream design stage to satisfy the design specifications at the detail design stage. In our study, a simple algorithm is proposed for generating mechanism under the design constraints on gear box and obstacle area. The spur gear train mechanism is generated by using the Monte Carlo method. The gear train is generated successfully in the several examples and the effectiveness of the mechanism generation algorithm is reported.

In recent manufacturing technologies, it is very important to satisfy environmental and economical requirements simultaneously. AIST is proposing a series of manufacturing technologies that satisfy high functionality, low cost and low environmental impact simultaneously and named it "minimal manufacturing." To evaluate the "minimumness" of manufacturing technologies, the authors have proposed a new efficiency index named "total performance index (TPI)" and a procedure of analysis based on the proposed index. The analysis named "total performance analysis (TPA)" is a powerful tool in determining design strategies of "green products". In this paper, the authors try to apply the TPA to a series of manufacturing processes. Through the effort, a procedure to evaluate manufacturing processes including the impact of manufacturing system and to obtain suggestions for process improvement is shown. By using the procedure, designers will become able to determine which process combination is really "eco-efficient."

Finite element methods have been widely utilized in crashworthiness analyses of automotive frame structures, and the results can successfully provide design engineers with beneficial information concerning crash phenomena. However, the use of such finite element methods for crashworthiness analysis during the conceptual design phase is currently problematic since they usually employ a large number of shell elements, required for accurate prediction of nonlinear collapse behavior, which entails massive computational cost. This paper proposes an optimal crashworthiness design method for straight thin-walled columns using simplified models using beam and non-linear spring elements. Therefore, crush mechanism and respose surfacemethod are applied to decide respondence of non-linear spring, and genetic algorithms are used to solve the optimization problem. The proposed optimization method is applied to a numerical example problem and the optimal solution obtained using the simplified analysis model is compared with the result when using a detailed analysis employing shell elements. The optimal solution provided by the simplified analysis model agrees well with the solution based on detailed analysis results.

Recently the development of the small satellite becomes active. In general, small satellites are expected to be developed faster and cheaper than the large satellites. A cost of a piggyback satellite is often decided by weight. Therefore it is important to reduce the weight of satellite for cost. Considering the severe mechanical environment of launching, we have to design satellite structure. The natural frequency of the satellite should be higher than the value decided by the launching and the satellite should bear the loads during launch. And the satellite should be considered with the value of the moment of inertia and a center of gravity because of stability of position. In this paper, we will propose the design of the satellite whose dimension is 20 centimeters cube. We focused on the trade-off design between minimization of stress condition and the appropriate center of gravity and the moment of inertia under the minimum natural frequency and the maximum mass for optimizing the satellite structures.

This paper proposes a hierarchical optimization-based approach for two-dimensional rectangular layout design problems by combining decomposition-based optimization and evolutionary algorithms toward solving complicated layout design problems. The Pareto optimality of subsystem-level layout against the optimality of system-level one is extracted through two-level hierarchical formulation as a prerequisite. In the approach, the layout topology is represented with sequence-pair and the shape of each subsystem or component with aspect ratio. They are optimized with genetic algorithms, while the Pareto optimality of sub-level is handled with multi-objective genetic algorithms. Top-level and sub-level layout problems are coordinated through exchange of preferable ranges of shapes and layout. An implemented approach is applied to an example problem for demonstrating its performance and capability.

This research targets at the 2-stage HFS (Hybrid Flowshop Scheduling) Problem with multiple machines at the second stage. In order to make it possible that the algorithms for the problem is effectively searching the solution space, "Permutation Scheduling" for that problem, in which the jobs are assigned in the same starting order, is proposed. The proof that the optimal solution is included in the permutation scheduling is shown by using contradiction. In the proof, PERT (Project Evaluation Review Technique) diagram is used to compare the scheduling in and out of Permutation Schedule for the highlight of the difference between them.

We present a method to interactively simulate 2D deformable objects such as flat cables, flexible printed circuits used in cell phones, note PCs etc. For interactive simulation, we adopted the mass-spring model that consists of structural springs and simple bending springs. Based on the energy minimization with geometric constraints, we obtained a static and inextensible deformation of the 2D object free of oscillations. We implemented this technique to 3D DMU (Digital mockup) software, which is applicable to assembly simulation of flexible printed circuits, flat cables.

We developed a mesh morphing technique that can be used to change the shape of existing analytical mesh models, and we generated a mesh model for a new shape by morphing the mesh model for the previous one. Our technique can be used for analysis during the early stages of design because it reduces the time required to generate analytical mesh models. Compared with conventional techniques, our technique adds and deletes the feature in the original mesh by using a Boolean technique and a mesh improvement technique. Our technique can process the addition and deletion of a feature in a 100,000-node mesh model in about 1 minute. Moreover, this technique can generate high-quality meshes that ensure the element stretch is more than 0.1. We demonstrated the effectiveness of our technique by applying it to models of cellular phone housing.

In the field of industrial design, to meet the needs of Simulation Driven Design (SDD), extracting useful information from mesh model becomes an important step in the design process. This paper presents an approach for breaking and splitting plate mesh model into three part of top surface, undersurface and side surface. We present three basic methods for detecting top surface; undersurface and side surface, and then propose and algorithm for splitting plate mesh model by using the three basic detecting methods. And the test result shows that the algorithm works well.

Mid-range and long-range laser scanners are useful for measuring large-scale engineering facilities. In this paper, we discuss a solid modeling system based on point-clouds captured from engineering facilities. When an engineering facility is measured by a laser scanner, the location of the scanner is restricted in most cases. Components of the engineering facility are only scanned from one side, and they are sometimes partially occluded by other components. To construct solid models using incomplete point-clouds, we propose a new image-based modeling approach combined with point-based modeling techniques. Since point-clouds captured by mid/long-range scanners have reflectance values as well as coordinates, their reflectance images can be used for image-based modeling. We show that our image-based modeling approach is useful for interactively complementing missing information. In addition, we show how to extract shape parameters as precisely as possible by considering industrial standards, assembly constraints, and user-specified constraints.

B-spline surface interpolation technique by geometric algorithm iteratively updates the control mesh in a global manner based on a simple point-surface distance computation followed by translations of the control vertices along the error vectors. In this paper we introduce two techniques to accelerate the computation of geometric interpolation algorithm. The first acceleration technique employs the method of Lagrange Multipliers, and the second technique uses the Steepest Descent Method. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods with some examples.

We present a method to construct a control mesh of a high quality subdivision surface. Our method assumes that the given triangular mesh is a control net of a Loop subdivision surface. The initial mesh is simplified using Quadric Error Metrics (QEM) algorithm. The initial control mesh is obtained by fitting simplified mesh using weights for each valence of points. The control points are iteratively updated using coefficients which are obtained by calculating weights for one control point of Box Spline. We demonstrate effectiveness of the presented method for closed objects.

In this paper we compare two methods for interpolating a triangular mesh of arbitrary topological type by a Loop subdivision surface. The first method is a conventional interpolation method that solves a linear system, while the second method is based on a geometric algorithm which iteratively updates the control mesh in a global manner based on a simple point-surface distance computation followed by translations of the control vertices along the error vectors without solving a linear system. The computational results show the superiority of the geometric algorithm over the conventional method.

In order to provide technical supports for designing a new type spiral plate forming machine, a three dimensional finite element method (FEM) model was built by using a FEM software (MSC.Marc) based on pressing tests. Deformation, stress distribution, residual stress and spring back of the spiral plate were calculated, and the relationships between the spiral pitch and the inclination angle of the punch and die, material properties and thickness of the plate were analyzed. A data converter from I-DEAS to MSC.Marc was developed and effectively used in the analysis. The results of FEM analysis and simulation have been applied to design the spiral plate forming machines.

It is very effective for a designer that designed gear profile can be grasped in the design process. In former research, the gear generating simulation system had been designed and developed. Using developed system, the designer select the rack shape and can obtain the cylindrical gear profile quickly. In this paper, the 3D simulation for meshing of a pair of cylindrical gears is developed. 3D model is created by triangle elements. A pair of gear simulation is created by the parallel movement of two gears. Moreover, developed system has 3D display function of a conical involute gear. Conical Involute Gear is created by the group of profile shifted cylindrical gears divided axially. Developed simulation system is useful tool for conical involute gear design.

Calculating volume of defects in casting objects is important for high quality manufacturing. However, conventional methods cannot detect tiny defects, because not only their CT value does not fall down to the value of background but also they appear like one set in CT images. As a result, we do not take into account such tiny defects and their calculation accuracy is comparatively low. In this paper, we propose a quantitative method to calculate casting defects' volume. We define two types of defect by their size and apply different calculation models to each defect and also propose a method to separate each defect from the set of defects. As a result, we can handle all defects which are appeared in CT images. This paper also demonstrates quantitative estimation of defects' volume using measured CT data.

In this paper, Differential Evolution (DE) is examined through two aspects. Thus, one is the meta-heuristics, and the other is the global optimization technique. Indeed, DE can find the global minimum through numerical experiments. However, there are no proofs and useful examinations with regard to such comments. In this paper, DE is compared with the Generalized Random Tunneling Algorithm (GRTA) and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), that are the global optimization techniques. Through the examination, some common characteristics as the global optimization technique are clarified in this paper.

In this paper, the characteristics of the pareto fitness function are examined. Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEA) is widely used in the multi-objective design optimization. It is important to distribute the search points in the pareto-frontier in MOEA. To achieve this objective, the pareto-fittness function is often used. However, its characteristics are not clarified. Thus, it is important to clarify the characteristics of the pareto-fittness function.

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm considering the diversity of the solutions both in the objective space and decision variable space. There was a problem that developed algorithm in the laboratory of us before consider the diversity of the solutions only in the objective space. Then, it was necessary to consider both in the objective space and decision variable space. Fitness function is a concept that can classify solutions into non-inferior solutions and inferior solutions in the decision variable space. We propose new mechanism to find the pareto optimal solution in the decision variable space using it. We use fitness function to select the g-best among the inferior solutions in the decision variable space. Moreover, we improved update method of p-best. The validity of proposed approach is examined through some typical numerical examples. In addition, we compare proposed algorithm to developed algorithm in the laboratory of us before.

Teamology is a method to create creative project team established by Prof. Wilde. It is based on Questionnaire of Briggs & Myers identification of type (MBTI) called Personal Theory, whose base is on Jung's Type Theory. From MBTI, Prof. Wilde makes formula to make balance project team both in Information Collection domain and Decision-Making domain. He has published his experiences in team construction and published a book on Teamology in 2008. In this case study, we investigate the effectiveness of balanced project teams and try to see how it works. We carried out questionnaire to more than 120 employees in Maruzen Industry, and make different types of team and checked the difference of creativity. From the results, we have proven that balanced team showed the best performance. We also carried out the best way of questionnaire, and found out Wilde's questionnaire shows the best identification of type.

Most of meta-modeling based optimization or so called surrogate optimization use Gaussian distribution as basis function for their approximation. Although there are small differences between making up final approximate function, their importance lies in giving radius for each Gaussian distribution. In our conventional study, we have proposed convolute RBF. In it, we need to successively optimize radius of Gaussian distribution. Which is sometimes time consuming for the user. In this study, we are going to propose simple way of setting them in convolute RBF.

In Maruzen Industry, we have made virtual factory that simulate daily order and daily product of factory in 1/8 model, to simulate our industry. And we have optimized the way of scheduling and optimum buffer through this virtual simulator. We already knew that pull type scheduling is effective in our mind, but we had thought there are a little change and we did not want to change our system by then. Through approximate optimization, we noticed that there are big differences between push type scheduling, and there seems no change inside factory. So, we have changed our scheduling scheme, and this is a report of the fact in our industry.

Several researchers have proposed some repair method for damaged machines. It is well known that the stop drilling holes is useful and practical method for fatigue damages. Moreover, the relaxation effect of the stress concentration can be increased by adding notches, holes and so on to the stop drilling holes. The stress concentration of the crack with the stop drilling hole can be relaxed by adding two holes near the crack tip as the holes face with each other symmetrically. Then, it has been reported that the additional holes are effective in the fatigue crack extension. However, the influence which the additional holes have on retardation of the fatigue crack initiation and propagation is not clarified. In this paper, the fatigue tests of the cracked plated with the stop drilling holes and additional holes were carried out on the low carbon steel S45C changing spatial and dimensional relations between the stop drilling hole and the additional holes. The relations suitable for repairing the fatigue crack are examined.
