Two different kinds of repeated stress experiments were made the subjects of the present note. One experiment refers to cast iron, of which the fatigue resistance under repeated tensile stress was compared with that under repeated bending stress. The bending stress corresponding to a definite number of repetitions was found to be so large as nearly twice the tensile stress. Another experiment refers to the fatigue resistance of steel under repeated bending stress applied with or without the simultaneous action of steady torsional stress. The endurance property of steel under repeated bending stress was not only unimpaired by the action of torsion but was rather elevated in most cases, in conformity with the results of previous experiments. These experiments show that the stress at a point of material can not be taken as a criterion of strength. The nature of the fatigue failure is brieflv discussed to elucidate the results of the experiments.

It is shown in this paper that, when all the conditions are symmetrical about the same axis, mass effect being taken into consideration, elastic problems can be treated two dimensionally and can be solved easily by the introduction of two arbitrary functions by which the displacement components are expressed very simply, one of the functions being in a simple relation to the dilatation or to the rotation and the other function being in a certain relation to the former function. The general solutions for these functions are obtained in spheroidal and in spherical coordinates, and as an example for actual problems, the elasticity of a rotating sphere, hollow or solid, are fully solved.
