The purpose of this study was to identify the factors related to self-care agency in patients with primary breast cancer after surgery, and to discuss the appropriate nursing care of them. We conducted a questionnaire survey on 111 patients who are followed in outpatient department at two general hospitals in Prefecture A. The survey investigated attributes (age, duration of breast cancer, operative procedure, experience of adjuvant treatments such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiation, the presence or absence of spouse, children, job and hobby, and satisfaction level of treatments) and self-care agency. Self-Care Agency Questionnaire (SCAQ) with 29 questions by Honjo was used to measure self-care agency. The valid responses were 81. To identify the factors related to self-care agency in patients, a logistic regression analysis was performed. The results revealed the following two items as related factors. The factors were having some hobbies and interests (OR=2.857) and satisfaction level with treatments (OR=9.726). The findings indicate that in order to promote a self-care agency in primary breast cancer patients after surgery, it is effective to encourage them to have some hobbies and interests, while providing therapeutic environment in which they could be highly satisfied with their treatments.
