OBJECTIVE: To examine the sedative and arousal effects of hand and foot massage (HFM) using essential oils on healthy women. METHODS : Sixteen participants, aged 24.3 ± 2.78 (mean ± S.D.), received a 30-minute HFM under three conditions in a randomized cross-over design: HFM without essential oil (control) ; HFM with 5% peppermint and lemongrass (PE/LE) oils ; and HFM with 5% lavender and geranium (LA/GE) oils. A 10-minute rest followed each HFM. During each of these periods, heart rate was measured and saliva was collected to evaluate cortisol and IgA levels. Participants completed psychological questionnaires before and after HFM. RESULTS : A statistical procedure with two-way analysis of variance revealed that high-frequency (HF) heart rate activity increased and the ratio of low-frequency (LF) activity to HF activity (LF/HF) decreased after HFM with LA/GE, whereas the opposite occurred with PE/LE. After HFM, cortisol levels decreased sharply with LA/GE and PE/LE, and IgA levels showed the greatest increase during HFM with PE/LE. Negative mood scores markedly decreased with LA/GE, while positive mood scores increased more greatly after HFM with PE/LE, compared to the control trial. Compared to the other two trials, fatigue scores decreased most remarkably and relaxation scores increased the most after HFM with PE/LE. Menstrual cycle or degree of self-awareness on health of subjects influenced LF/HF, CS level and IgA levels. When analysis of variance was performed with "menstrual cycle" or "degree of self-awareness on health" as inter subject factors, the change of CS levels and IgA levels before, during, and after massage significantly differed among control, LA/GE and PE/LE trials. CONCLUSION : The present research indicates HFM with various essential oils can have diverse beneficial effects on the female body and mind. The study further implies the efficacy of using essential oils with sedative or arousal effect during aromatherapy with HFM depending on conditions to alleviate symptoms unique to women.

Objectives : The present research examined causal mechanisms of body dissatisfaction, binge eating, and dieting behaviors in female university students from the standpoint of cognitive-behavioral counseling. In Study 1, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 258 female students. Results showed that Self-Evaluative Salience (SES) of appearance schemas and Safety Beliefs and Body Control (SBBC) of body checking cognitions influenced body dissatisfaction, binge eating, and dieting behaviors. Study 2 experimentally examined if SES and SBBC caused body dissatisfaction using 29 female students with the average or higher SES and SBBC scores as participants. They were assigned to an SES, SBBC, or non-activation (NA) condition. Results demonstrated a significant interaction of the condition and the period for negative appearance-related thoughts (ART; F(2,26)=6.55, p<.01). Bonferroni post hoc test revealed a significant increase in the negative ART for the SES and SBBC groups but not for the NA group (p<.01,p<.05, respectively). The effect sizes for the scales to measure dissatisfaction with one's face and entire body were substantial, though they were small. This research provides evidence that SES and SBBC are part of the causal factors of body dissatisfaction, binge eating, and dieting behaviors.

Objectives:The primary aim of this study was to explore the health impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on the physical and psychological condition of adult patients, and to clarify the pathology of IPV. The secondary aim was to clarify the role of psychosomatic medicine (PSM) doctors in IPV survivor treatment and clinical practice. Methods : We conducted a study with IPV survivors over 20 years old among patients whose first visit to our department was between January 2004 and December 2010. All patients were asked a wide range of health questions and explained their experiences of abuse. We conducted semi-structured interviews and examined their Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scores. Results : Survivors of IPV suffered various acute and chronic physical health problems and frequent mental distress such as depressive mood and anxiety. Patients sometimes complained of vague and incomprehensible symptoms. The four factors (physical, psychological, sexual, economical/social aspects) of IPV are often combined. Conclusions : The pathology of IPV is based on a power structure and often contains generational links and reproduction of violence. PSM doctors play an important role for IPV survivors through early intervention and coordination with multiple facilities.
