The purpose of this study is to examine premenstrual symptoms in Japanese women who are developmentally mature. One hundred forty one women aged 25 to 45 were asked to fill in the PMS Memory, a prospective rating menstrual diary, for three menstrual cycles, and 388 menstrual cycles were collected in all. Symptoms were scored and the accumulative-sum-total of the frequency and seriousness of each of the physical, mental and social symptoms was calculated. The result showed that the main premenstrual symptoms were irritability, getting angry easily and breast swelling. Differences in chronological age, having given birth or not, and type of occupation showed significant differences in some symptoms. When the transition of each symptom from the pre-menstrual to menstrual phase was examined, the results showed that 15 symptoms were characterized as pre-menstrual syndromes (PMS) and 12 symptoms were peri-menstrual (PEMS). The results also showed that the symptoms of PMS showed at the brain level as irritability and getting angry easily, and ovarian hormone level as breast swelling. The symptoms of PEMS appeared at the uterine level as abdominal cramps. Finally, the premenstrual symptoms of Japanese mature women were classified as PMS and PEMS by characterized clinical figures.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in mature Japanese women and their life-styles (including diet, exercise, coping with stress, and stress-related behavior). The subjects were 141 women aged from 25 years to 45 years. They recorded daily basal body temperature with physical, psychological and social symptoms for one menstrual cycle using PMS Memory (developed by Matsumoto et al., 1997), while at the same time monitoring their life-styles on the life-style questionnaire constructed by the authors. The results showed that subjects who ate well-balanced, healthy meals and bathed regularly usually had fewer premenstrual symptoms. Furthermore, subjects who experienced stressful life events had more perimenstrual symptoms (the major symptom of PEMS being abdominal pain). Satisfaction in their everyday lives and work-related stress also significantly correlated with symptoms. One of the primary factors associated with PMS appeared to be perception of life stress ; learning effective ways to cope with stress can also help to relieve PMS symptoms. These data have implications for women's health education with regard to self-care of PMS.

Nowadays, much attention has been paid for preventive interventions to reduce drinking, smoking and drug abuse among Japanese young women. Heavy alcohol consumption has been associated with infertility which could be concerned with ovulation failure, amenorrhea, dyspareunia and psychosomatic orders. However, young women with alcohol and other drug abuses would be face multiple problems, such as health problems, poor social support and morbid mental illness. Far little works have been made to give explanation for the endocrinological and psychomatic problems among young female alcoholism without smoking and drug abuse. In this report, highlights the endocrinological and psychosomatic point of view on a case of young female alcoholism without drug use and smoking. The case is a 21-year-old nuliparous Japanese woman presented with a 5-year history of severe alcohol drinking due to parent's divorce. She had experienced amenorrhoea, dyspareunia and psychological disorders. On examination, the patient had hypergonadotropic hypogonadism (ovarian amenorrhea) and hyperprolactinemia. The psychosomatic examination (CMI, MAS, ANS-S) revealed that this patient had been suffering from neurosis, anxiety and psychosomatic disorders. By prohibiting alcohol intake along with hormonal and psychosomatic treatment, the patient has recovered the menstruation and normal life.
