Methane hydrate in offshore Japan is expected to be a valuable domestic resource, and the R & D project toward its commercial development has been in progress under the Ministry of Economy Trade and
Industry (METI). In the first offshore production test conducted in the waters off the coasts of Atusmi and Shima peninsulas in March 2013, we succeeded in about six-day continuous gas production at an average rate of 20,000 m
3 /d. The next offshore production test is planned in 2017 for the evaluation of technology
for preventing sand production and the data acquisition and analysis of longer gas production performance. This speech presents technology perspective toward the realization of commercial methane hydrate development including future offshore test plans.
