Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM) is a promising reaction to produce ethylene from natural gas in one step. Basic oxides are known to be effective catalysts for OCM. Especially, lanthanum oxide has high activity for OCM. Therefore, we investigated modifying lanthanum oxide with alkali-earth metal cation for high active/selective OCM catalyst. Among them, Ca and Sr improved the activity. It was inferred that the improvement of activity derived from enhancement of both basicity and oxygen defect on catalyst surface.

To achieve lower reaction temperature and higher conversion than existing catalytic processes for hydrogen production, catalytic reactions in an electric field for ethanol decomposition, steam reforming of ethanol, steam reforming of methane, water gas shift reaction were conducted. Conversion of reactant increased on catalytic reaction in an electric field by the interaction of electric field and catalyst. The activity was significantly improved with increasing current of the electric field.

Activities of supported Ru catalysts for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) were examined. The HDS activities of supported Ru catalysts were remarkably changed by various pretreatments. Especially, 5%Ru/Al

3 treated by calcination at 200 ºC followed by sulfidation or temperature programmed sulfidation (TPS) using 3% H

2 showed high activity for HDS of thiophene. Furthermore, HDS activity of 5%Ru/SiO
2 catalyst (calcined at 200 ºC) treated by TPS using 3% H
2S-N
2 was higher than those of 5%Ru/Al
2O
3 and CoMo/Al

3 catalysts.

The effect of citric acid addition on a series of Co-Mo/(B)/Alumina catalysts prepared by a post-treatment method was studied for the HDS activity of thiophene. The catalysts were also prepared by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique using Co(CO)
3NO as a precursor of Co. The prepared catalysts were characterized by means of NO and N
2 adsorption, LRS, EXAFS and UV-vis spectra. With a series of post-treated Co-Mo/(B)/Alumina catalysts, the HDS activity reached the maximum activity at the CA/Mo mole ratio of around 2. The addition of citric acid by the post-treatment significantly increased the HDS activity than by a simultaneous impregnation method, in particular at a 4 wt% Co-Mo/(B)/Alumina catalyst.

Zeolites are used up to now in industrially important processes such as petro-refinary and petrochemistry. From now, other functions must be required to meet crisis of resources and materials, and to meet a demand on fine chemistry or some other new fields. Here, we focus on basicity of the material, contrary to the conventional acidic character of zeolites. A vast number of acid catalyses has been developed, while little is known on base catalyses. At our preliminary investigation step, zeolite-supported base oxides, -ion exchanged alkali, and a zeolite having nitrogen substituted with framework oxygen were adopted as candidates for base-catalyzed reaction such as Knoevenagel condensation. We found that nitrogen in the framework showed milder basicity than that induced by alkaline oxide or ion, and that high selectivity for condensed products was given.

Novel solid acid catalysts are required instead of liquid acid catalysts based on green chemistry. In this work, various of zeolitc catalysts were examined for isobutane/1-butene alkylation to produce valuable fuel. We found that HBEA is more active than HZSM-5, HL and HY on this reaction.
