Self-regenerative trace noble metal-doped Ni/Mg(Al)O catalyst for steam reforming of methane

Trace noble metal-doped Ni/Mg(Al)O catalysts were prepared by adopting "memory" effect of hydrotalcite and applied in the daily start-up and shut-down (DSS) operation in steam reforming of methane. This Ni catalyst revealed not only high resistancy against oxidation and coking but also a self-regenerative activity during the DSS opearation; Ni(0) is oxidized to Ni(II) and incorporated into Mg(Al)O periclase, whereas Ni(II) is reduced to Ni(O) by hydrogen-spillover from trace noble metal. Such reversible reduction-oxidation of Ni species works for regenerating the finely dispersed active Ni metal particles duirng the DSS operation. Even severely sintered Ni metal particles after the steaming treatment at high temperature were re-dispersed during the DSS operation, resulting in the regeneration of activity.

On the steam reforming of methane, coke formation on the catalyst was severe problem which causes the deactivation of catalyst. So, suppressing the coke formation was expected for the fuel cell application. Up to now, we employed perovskite oxides as a support of catalyst which has mobile oxygen on/in the support, and conducted redox type steam reforming reaction with this catalyst. In this presentation, we tried to examine the effect of support on this reforming reaction.

The partial oxidation of methane using Rh catalyst supported on MgO, ZrO₂, CeO₂ mixed ceramics was examined for the production of synthesis gas from natural gas. From the study of respective effect of ZrO₂ and CeO₂ addition to MgO, high methane conversion and selectivities to H2 and CO were obtained at the mixture ratio of ZrO₂ and CeO₂ to MgO of unity. Futhermore, the highest performance was found when the support material of MgO:ZrO₂:CeO₂=1:1:1 was used. From the results of contact time dependence and pulse experiments, it was suggested that the direct partial oxidation proceeded as well as oxidative reforming of methane.

The process development and ecomic evaluation was conducted for the production of synthesis gas from natural gas and oxigen using newly developed catalyst. This process makes it possible to reduce the reactor size drastically compared with the conventional one due to very short contact time and quite small amount of catalyst (approx. 1/10 to 1/100 of conventional one). In addition, high conversion and selectivity can be achieved at relatively low temperature. The amount of oxygen was also smaller than expected, so that the size of oxygen plant which is causing high cost can be reduced. Owing to these properties, the more compact and economic process can be developed than the conventional one for syngas production.

Biogas is one of important energy which could be obtained from the anaerobic fermentation of organic materials. There are several problems in the catalytic reforming of biomethane due to the higher concentration of H2S in biogas. Therefore, we examined direct reforming of biogas at ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure without catalyst by electric discharge (esp. LEP, DBD), and influence of type of discharge on the chemical reactions in this study.

Since the synthesis gas with H₂:CO=2:1 is obatined in CH₄ partial oxidation, CH₄ partial oxidation is expecting as the primary reaction for converting CH₄ to liquid fuels. However, pure oxygen is essentially requested for this reaction. In this study, oxygen permeation property of Pr₂NiO₄ with doping excess amount of Ga. It was found that the extremely high oxygen permeation rate is achieved on Pr₂Ni_0.75Cu_0.25Ga_0.05O₄ from air to He. In addition, further higher oxygen permeation rate is achieved on Pr₂Ni_0.75Cu_0.25Ga_0.07O₄ under CH₄ partial oxidation condition.

A novel mixed catalyst system composed of alkali salts and Cu-based was developed to synthesize methanol from syngas via ethyl formate in a slurry reactor. The results exhibited that among the used alkali salts (HCOOM, M=Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), sodium formate showed the optimizing catalytic function with Na-containing copper catalyst, and high CO conversion(>80%) and methanol selectivity(~90%) with a mass space velocity of 1800L(STP)/h.kg was achieved at low temperature of 433K and 5.0Mpa.. In addition, it was found that all alkali salts used were converted to formate during the reaction.

Syntheses of titanatranes containing [(O-2,4-Me2C6H2-6-CH2)2-{O(CH2)nCH2}]N3- (n = 1,2) have been explored. Catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization by Ti2(OiPr)2{[(O-2,4-Me2C6H2-6-CH2)2(OCH2-CH2)]N}2 (1a) - MAO catalyst increased at high temperature; the activity also increased upon addition of AlMe3. Ti(O-2,6-iPr2C6H3){[(O-2,4-Me2C6H2-6-CH2)2(OCH2CH2)]N} (1c) showed higher activity than 1a under the same conditions. Copolymerization of ethylene with 7-methyl-1,6-octadiene and 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene was explored by nonbridged-half titanocenes. Consequently, copolymer possessed olefinic double bond in the side chain without side reaction was obtained by optimization of catalyst system. Novel methods of preparing planar-chiral ferrocenes and phosphaferrocenes was developed. The methods were based on asymmetric metathesis reactions and the products were obtained nearly optically pure forms. The mechanism of the stereoselectivity will be discussed in detail. The products were converted to the corresponding butadiene-bridged ferrocenophanes with retention of the optical purity, which could served as monomers for ROMP. The polymers obtained by the ROMP process were optically active with high-stereoregularity.

Catalysts composed of Fe or Co complex promotes cyclopolymerization of dienes in the presence of MMAO to produce the polymers with new structures having five-membered rings along the polymer chain. Trans- or cis- five-membered rings are formed depending on the kind of the catalysts. Based on these results as well as reaction kinetics, the plausible mechanism of the polymerization is proposed.

In order to prepare polymer particles with controllable shape, cycloolefine including TD, CHD and NB were polymerized by Ni complexes activated by MgCl₂/2-ethylhexanol/AlR3. When Ni complexes were activated by MgCl₂/2-ethylhexanol/AliBu3 activator system, polycycloolefin polymer particles were obtained and the size of them in the range of micrometers order. The investigation and result about key factors to the control of particles' shape, such as the kind of Ni complex and polymerization conditions, will be reported.

A combination of polyolefin and polar polymers by chemical linkage has been attracting a lot of attention as a new polymer hybrid between immiscible segments such as crystalline / amorphous, polar / non-polar or hydrophilic / hydrophobic segments, bringing some improved and unique properties compared with the ordinary polyolefins. In our presentation, we introduce a new synthetic methodology for polymer hybrids based on polyolefins using a combination of halogenated polyolefins and living radical polymerization.
