This is a joint project between Oribe Institute of Design and Oda Ceramics co., a local ceramic producer. The present-day market crisis of ceramic tableware has too a deep impact on the ceramics producing region of Mino. While there were more than 1300 manufacturers during it's time of prosperity in the eighties less than half of them extant today. An important cause is the intention of this whole region to act like one big company enhancing efficiency and productivity since the Meiji area. Thus every single manufacturer became an specialized anonymous part of the "Mino-Factory". Most of them were dependent for a long time on wholesalers in distribution, design-ideas and product-development. By experiencing a standard design development process they acquire the ability of self-contained product development, thus gaining options for future action. The results of this project hopefully will have some influence over the region of Mino.

Sumiyoshi Cove is located at the downstream basin on the right side of Ibi River in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture. The levee developed around Sumiyoshi Cove has been improved for the appropriate safety standards against high water with the full consideration of wave extinguish methods and levee raising methods. With an improvement of high water prevention levee, the fullscaled landscape design has been conducted since 1994 with the main theme of "Creation of Contemporary Cultural Assets". During the design, the creation of water front space in accordance with the city planning was implemented with the conservation and utilization on the places of natural beauty and historical interest at the river front of Kuwana City, such as "Shichiri no Watashi" (traditional river ferry terminal) and Sumiyoshi Cove. The landscape design of Sumiyoshi Area along Ibi River has created a water front space along the river for the main purpose of securing water front scenery with: (1) the mitigation of psychological pressure due to the existence of the huge civil structures such as levee, and water gate, (2) the coexistence of historical & cultural assets and modern structures and (3) the totally coordinated design in terms of the shape, colors and materials in a unified way.

This design created for the <<Okinawa Memorial Service for All the War Dead>> was carried out in Mabuni at Itoman city in Okinawa. For the 50th anniversary ceremony of this year, the old altar was improved with the creation of an alternative design representing a space of mourning and praying toward the next generations. During the war time, many civilians saved their lives in the sugarcane field. Based on this history, the sugarcane which is very present in Okinawan scenery became the main theme of the design. To adapt to the budget, industrial white paper tubes were chosen as material. 340 tubes were set on the site in a configuration that the stand, the altar and the monument would be looking as floating in the air, resulting in a way that the greenery, the monument, and the sky could be overlooked through the white paper tubes which like the sugarcanes would be swayed by the wind in full harmony with the surroundings.

The home garden has evolved from a place for gardening only to a playground, living room and kitchen. Conventional gardens are created utilizing traditional landscaping methods, which are inflexible and difficult to redesign from the perspective of individual sections. This project seek to employ a new method of garden d-esign that makes use of modular units that correspond to the various demands individuals make of their gardens. The surface size of the modules is 900×900mm, a conenient size for the application of various specifications, but a size that also allows the individual to feel the area. We actually designed and built an experimental garden called Garden Labo at the Nattoku Kobo studio of Sekisui House's Comprehensive Housing R&D Institute, a facility specifically created for research and as a place where visitors can see and experience first hand.

"Iroha Playing Cards for Low Vision" are Japanese playing cards that consist of humorous poems and illustrations which explain the daily living situations of people with low vision. The cards were written by a member of the Association of People with Low Vision based on 17-syllable satirical poems, and produced by the Association. They were designed so that they could be enjoyed both by people with normal eyesight and those with low vision. Playing the game together provides people with normal vision an opportunity to learn more about low vision and how people with low vision deal with everyday situations. The cards consist of "Reading Cards" and "Picture Cards". Each of the Reading Cards contains one of the poems written in white Gothic type on a black background. On the back side of each card is the first character only of the poem on that card. The Picture Cards illustrate daily situations from the lives of 6 people with low vision, drawn with a comic touch. On the back sides of the Picture Cards are explanations of low vision in categories such as symptoms, conditions, and the vision aids used by people with low vision.

This project was launched to design the brand value for "COEDO beer" whose base is in the town of Kawagoe, earned itself the nickname "Ko-Edo", in Saitama prefecture. The main purpose of this project was to let so called a local beer brand go through a drastic change into a premium beer brand by the innovation of all merchandizes. The logo and the design under the concept, "Brimming with Colors of Japan", compatibly aimed both at gaining the increase in the recognition of the brand in the market and at furnishing the brand with the appropriate atmosphere as a premium beer. We carefully took rather longer time to develop things like a brand concept, brand strategy, and the details of products for a small brewery to establish the unique position in Japanese beer market where keen competitions have been done by 4 major breweries. In addition to the success of one company, COEDO beer, we also have expected the contribution to the enhancement of the images of said Kawagoe region, "Ko-Edo", from the design and have built the suitable outlook of COEDO.

We revised a conventional chest from "Universal design point of view" considering domestic stock problem of wheel chair users We recognized that the actual chest with liner movement pull-action drawers, presents accessibility and usability problems to wheel chair users. So, we adopted a half-moon shaped revolving drawer, in order to change the action to open the drawer - a simple one hand operation - just push one side, the other side comes out And taking off the lowest drawer, foot clearance was provided to facilitate wheel chair access. We made 3 prototypes step by step so far. The first one was to check the revolving mechanism functionality, with second and third ones, we tried to solve the problem both modern design aesthetics and usability. The latest prototype has still unsolved problems such as, the inside capacity, structural rigidity and security in case of earthquake, etc. Universal design enhances significantly the use scene of the product and it's target as well.

The technology and infrastructure which everybody can access information anytime anywhere is ready towards realization of ubiquitous society. In such a situation, IBM studied the information system in the floor of retail store. In order to realize a customer's better experience in a floor, total customer experiences, such as a store, a terminal and contents, were designed as an object of a design. The persona scenario technique was used on the basis of the process of a user centered design as design approach, and the design was considered. The concept was evaluated with the prototype using 3DCG and the concept of IT solution in a store was summarized from the customer viewpoint.

This is an attempt to develop new interior products which should be regarded as a typical example of demonstrating the efficient use of remnant wood laminae. Two models which have reached practical use through a series of experiments are shown here; a board-type stacking stool to be used on the tatami-mats, and a unit-type partition composed of laminated louvers which are capable of standing alone on the floor. The significance of this work lies in the concept that these models are intended to provide diverse design variations. It is with this perspective that this attempt is considered worthwhile as a proposal of low-cost, energy-saving and low-emission design approach, and thereby a contribution to the promotion of green-design mind among the basic structures of manufacturing industry.

The purpose of this design study is to demonstrate the prototype for user interface design on next generation mobile phone to the visitors. This prototype is created by utilizing user centered design method and persona method. Recently, mobile phone is very popular among kids to senior person. Next generation mobile phone has to be new user interface design, that is to have more customer satisfaction, individual design for various user and more attractive design. The authors introduce design process and proposed user interface design for the display at IBM Yamato Laboratory. This design process was prepared by utilizing user centered design method and persona method.
