The auditory acuity of 26 school children with moderate to severe hearing loss. The battery of tests consisted of pure tone audiometry, including SISI and TTD, speech audiometry, melody recognition and assessment of intelligibility of child's speech patterns.
It was found that the threshold of hearing at 500Hz Played a significant role upon the application of a hearing aid. The tests of SISI and TTD also seemed to be helpful to evaluate the effectiveness of a hearing aid. The speech audiometry should be carried out with and without a hearing aid before fitting it to a child. The children with a slight hearing loss who did not use a hearing aid usually showed normal range in the tests of melody recognition and speech intelligibility. However, the children with a severe hearing loss who used a hearing aid were usually poor in melody recognition and exhibited many articulation errors.
