Carbon-fiber cassettes with carbon-fiber grids or with high density grids were compared with conventional systems in sialography and cephalography. Phantom images with many types of grids and cassettes were taken and they were evaluated by human visual detection, and their physical properties were also measured. The optimum system in dental radiology was then determined, based on both visual and physical evaluation.
The Bucky factor and the scatter fraction of the grids and cassettes were measured. Contrast, sharpness, the grid line and the total image quality were also evaluated visually by making observations on phantom images. Carbon-fiber cassettes had better image quality factors than aluminum or plastic cassettes. High density grids and carbon-fiber grids also had advantages. Scattered radiation from aluminum, which was the main material of the conventional grids and cassettes, was present in significant enough quantities to affect image contrast and sharpness. High density grids with carbon-fiber cassettes were selected for sialography, and carbon-fiber grids with carbon-fiber cassettes were selected for cephalography.

We reported previously that the posterior margin of the maxillary bone tends to depress after radical operation for the sinusitis.
The aim of this study is to clarify whether the posterior margin of the maxilla also tends to depress or not following the surgery for the postoperative maxillary cyst (POMC).
We examined the rotational panoramic tomographs of 52 POMC patients (25 males, 27 females) by the angle which is set by the skull base and the posterior margin of the maxilla, and by the morphological typing (Type 1: flat, Type 2: convex, Type 3: concave, Type 4: uneven, Type 5: obliterated).
After the surgery for the POMC, the angle has decreased and the morphological typing has changed to Type 3 in 11 patients (5 males, 6 females) when the POMC has close relationship with the posterior margin of the maxilla. The posterior margin of the maxilla also tends to depress following the surgery for the POMC. In addition, the change was evident at 2 months later and the progression of it was slight after 20 months later. Since these findings correspond to those after radical operation for the sinusitis, it might be suggested that the cause of them are the same, that is scarring of the granulation tissue.

The objective of the present study was to establish a method of numerical expression for X-ray findings. 3 cases of radioopaque oral lesions of fibrous dysplasia, odontoma and cementoma were analysed on the photographic densities in their dental radiographs, which were digitalized by an image analyzer. The two methods of neumerical expression for the photographic densities of the radioopaque lesions were used. The first method was to calculate the ratio of the averaged density of the lesion divided by the averaged density of the normal region. The ratio multiplied by 100 was a measure of the radioopaqueness of the lesion and termed as average density ratio, ADR. The second method was to calculate the density gradients of the lesion by measuring the densities of matrixes in the region of interest made in the lesion. The gradients were averaged over the matrixes and the gradient average, GA was obtained and a measure of the non-uniformity densitiy of the lesion. The GA's were measured on the interior regions and the margin regions of the lesion, which were written as GA (IN) and GA (MARGIN), respecively.
The results are as follows. 1) the ADR's ranged 44-86 in fibrous dysplasia, 41-86 in complex odontoma, 42-89 in compound odontoma and 70-90 in cementoma. The lesions in cementoma were significantly radioopaque compared to other lesions. 2) the GA (IN)'s ranged 0.01-0.76 in fiberous dysplasia, 0.4-2.4 in complex odontoma, 1.1-15 in compound odontoma, and 0.03-1.9 in cementoma. The fibrous dysplasia lesions were most uniform. 3) the GA (MARGIN)'s ranged 0.05-2.9 in fibrous dysplasia, 7.4-41 in complex odontoma, 2.1-39 in compound odontoma and 1.0-22 in cementoma. The peripheries of the fibrous dysplasia lesions were the most vague and the peripheries of other lesions were clearly defined. Those results were found to be paralleled with X-ray findings of the respective lesions.

Some trials have been made to record simultaneously the hard tissues and soft tissues in roentgen cephalometry.
They were the screen method, the wedge filter method and highvoltage method. But, these methods have some weakness, which are the lowering in sharpness and the appearance of the boundary line due to the wedge filter.
The purpose of this study is a supplement for these weaknesses. Then, we made a compensated screen by painting the specific coloring matter to the screen area corresponding to the soft tissues of the lateral view of the head.
In the results, the compensated screen was better than usual screen in senitivity, in sharpness of the compensated area and in gainness.
In the clinical application, good results were obtained for recording the hard tissues and the soft tissues.

We presented a case of neurilemmoma at the region of the left parotid gland in 44-year-old male. His chief complaint was an asymptomatic mass below the left earlobe that developed 4 years ago.
Radiography, scintigraphy and ultrasonography were performed prior to operation.
From the clinical findings and the images of these examinations, a cystic lesion was suspected.
From the operative observation, a large encapsulated mass located at the lateral-posterior part of the parotid, partially in fused with the facial nerve. The enucleated mass measured 5×5cm in size. The cut surface of this tumor was solid having a gangrene in the center.
Pathologically, this lesion was diagnosed as neurilemmoma with cystic degeneration.
Various image diagonstic examinations were undertaken in this case. Ultrasonography produced most distinct visualization of the actual condition of this lesion.
