In the 1960s, outdoor sculpture exhibitions began in Ube and Kobe, and other cities followed suit. From this point on, public art installations became a nationwide boom. In the 1980s, a wider variety of art festivals began, including "Ushimado International Art Festival" (Okayama Prefecture) and "Hakushu Art Camp" (Yamanashi Prefecture).
