We studied five patients with amnestic syndrome after subarachnoid hemorrhage for cerebral aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation. The patients were ranged from 41 to 71 years old (mean age: 57.6), and were two males and three females. All of them had disorientation and recent memory disturbance, but had almost normal remote memory and digit span.
The P
300 evoked by auditory stimuli and neuropsychological tests (Mini mental state examination, WAISR, Kaneko's memory scale) were assessed with the site of the lesion on CT.
P
300 in 20 normal volunteers were also examined and compared with those in the patients. P
300 latency were normal except for one patient in whom the latency were slightly prolonged compared with the control. The prolongation of the P
300 latency seemed to be correlated with the frontal lesion rather than with the neuropsychological deficits.
Our results suggested that P
300 latency was not correlated with memory function in the patients with amnestic syndrome.
