The interface between a perfiuoropolyether lubricant film and a carbon film on a thinfilm magnetic recording disk was characterized by angle-resolved XPS. The presence of sp2 elements on the carbon surface was detected in the peak 2 area, which was recognized as a shoulder peak at about 286 eV. The rate of the functional end groups of the lubricant agent existing on the interface was calculated from the ratio of the peak height of the functional end groups to that of the main structures, which was measured by angle-resolved XPS at θ=0, 80 degrees. As a result, it was found that when there were many sp2 elements on the interface between the lubricant film and the sputtered carbon film, there were also many functional end groups of the lubricant agent, indicating that adsorptional interaction takes place between the sp2 elements and the functional end groups on the interface. The measurements of the angle-resolved XPS provided specific information on the interface between the lubricant film and the sputtered carbon film.
