This study described the relationships between the attributes of universities and university library collections with a focus on the number of book pages. In this analysis, we considered the viewpoint of university students as the primary users of university libraries, and examined the following attributes as perceived by university students: establishment types, deviation values, and locations. We divided universities into groups based on each attribute, and compared the book titles held by each group. Focusing on the number of book pages, which is rarely considered in analyses of university library collections, we analysed their descriptive statistics and histograms. We selected four academic fields (i.e. economics, natural science, literature and engineering), and described the characteristics of each attribute while comparing the results of our analyses by field. We targeted a total of 251 schools and 334,594 titles from these four fields. Among the characteristics common to the four fields, we found that the results of our analysis of establishment types showed that the mean and median numbers for book pages in the book titles held by public universities were greater than those for national and private universities. In addition, the distribution of book titles held by public universities tended to lean toward having a greater number of book pages than that of national and private universities.

This study aims to clarify the characteristics of Japanese national university library organizations that have changed due to the national university reforms in the early 2000s from the viewpoint of typology. We classified the current national university library organizations into eight categories and identified their characteristics. From the characteristics of organizational classification, we found that the organizations have diversified; 1) organizations that continue the pre-incorporation structure, 2) organizations that have integrated with other departments within the university, 3) organizations that are responsible for additional non-library services. In addition, from the comparing of the pre- and post-incorporation periods and analyzing of the size of universities based on their number of faculties, we revealed while large national universities (8 or more faculties) continued to maintain their preincorporation organizational structure, small or medium-sized universities (7 faculties or less) merged with other departments of university office, reduced the number of managers and downgraded librarian management positions as a result of the mergers. Finally, we found that most of these organizational restructurings have been carried out for the purpose of streamlining and consolidating operations throughout the university.
