Waste separation behavior caused by the location and design was clarified as a result of the actual condition survey at the campus of Fukuoka University, Japan. 2 places were selected to investigate the amount waste collected, the separation rate for recyclables, and the foreign material rate mixed into recycles in each dust box, such as “Combustibles”, “Pet bottles”, “Cans”, and “Glasses”. As a result, in case of the dust box with fewer separation and bad-looking appearance for separation, the separation rate was low, and the foreign material rate was contrastively high. As a while, in case of the dust box with much separation, the amount of waste significantly decreased, the separation rated decreased, and the foreign material rate increase significantly according to the increase of moving distance to the dust box. As a conclusion, the separation rate tended to decrease according to the increase of the moving distance regardless of the dust box design.

The amount of waste created at construction
sites amounts to 25% of all industrial waste. The areas for disposing of are
decreacing. We have to reduce the amount of waste by recycling.  

The purpose of this research is to promote of
Zero-emissions from by-products generated when constructing houses. In the
previous report,we predicted the amount and the occurrence time of by-products
from measuring the weight of all the by-products. But this method is not
suitable for individual tasks. To improve its accuracy, it is necessary to
construct a different method of prediction. The new method of prediction must focuse
on the amount of work. The higher amount of work means the higher amount of by-products.
So in this report, we researched the relation between the amount of by-products
generated when constructing houses and the amount of work. We measured the
weight of all by-products and the amount of work at five construction sites. We
researched the amount of work by couting number of people who worked, how long
they worked at the construction sites and the amount of work.

Since 2006, the Fukushima University Cooperative has been using recyclable lunch boxes for take-out food. The boxes have a removable film on the inside, and clean plastics, after removing the film, can be used to make new products. In order to use the plastics for manufacturing new containers, used containers without the films have to be collected and sent to the manufacturer. The Fukushima University Cooperative has been implementing several measures to collect the used containers without films since 2009, in cooperation with the activity and research of the author’s seminar. The measures include setting up and increasing collection boxes, introducing deposit-refund systems, enlarging the target products and containers for deposit-refund systems, setting up temporary events for collection such as lotteries with used containers, and advertisement or provision of information on collecting used containers. This study summarizes the aforementioned measures and analyzes the effect of each measure on the collection rate empirically. The results suggest that deposit-refund systems are effective in increasing the collection rate and they become more effective by setting up collection boxes and collection events.

Appropriate design of a recycling system does not necessarily result in its establishment in the real world. This study attempted to construct a database of knowledge and know-how in biomass recycling activities with the ultimate objective of utilizing practical knowledge for effective establishment of recycling systems. 521 problems and 385 solutions from 11 cases of biomass recycling were compiled, and we found that major problems were relating to use of recycled products such as compost, etc.

There are many cases, in which introduction of renewable energy business has to be abandoned because of negative business balance. Independent distributed renewable energy can secure the energy required in case of emergency and can provide local benefits such as employment and local industry. However, such local benefits have been evaluated not quantitatively and have not been considered in business balance. This study developed a business planning model for renewable energy including biomass energy according to regional specific conditions, considering quantitative evaluation of local benefits. The model was applied to a case study, in which a local government manages a district heat supply system using woods, a biogas plant for cow manure and a photovoltaic power generation system. As a result, the local benefits such as energy security in case of emergency, employment and local industry found to be significant, although the monetary value of them depends on kinds of renewable energies. Add of the all local benefits to the business balance showed a positive value in the total balance of an account for the local government.
