This report uses the welding tool and backing plate made of silicon nitride in friction stir welding of austenitic stainless steel.
To be efficient use of frictional heat is generated, high-speed welding of 1m/min is possible.
In addition, the joint efficiency is at least equal to that of base material.
At the same time, the improvment of corrosion resistance was obtained.

The double-sided friction stir welding of magnesium alloys was investigated in this study. The results showed that the material flow during double-sided FSW was different from the one-sided FSW. After double-sided FSW, the effect of the material flow under different tools and welding parameters on microstructure, especially microtexture, and mechanical properties was evaluated.

To study the characteristic of the welding distortion in thin structures, experiments were conducted. The test model was a thin plate stiffened structure and a large twisting deformation was observed. The same structure was analyzed as a large deformation problem using a thermal elastic plastic FEM and a elastic FEM based on the concept of inherent deformation. The computed results by both methods showed the twisting deformation which is a typical buckling type deformation.

A novel spot FSW technique was applied to high melting point material SPCC steel. Flat welds without keyhole can be obtained under suitable welding conditions. It revealed that the welds showed a transitional microstructure from ultra-fined microstructure in the upper plate and coarse grain structure in the lower plate. The Fe/Fe welds show high tensile strength and the effect of welding parameters on the mechanical properties were also investigated.

Spot joining between Al alloy sheet (Al) and steel sheet (Fe)
by means of friction surfacing was studied. When joining, Al and Fe are rotated relatively with respect to the consumable rod of Al alloy while pressing the rod onto the Al at the overlapped part. At the same time, the rod metal forms a padding which compensates
for the thickness at the joined part. As a result, relatively higher tensile shear strength of the joining was obtained.

We made aluminum alloy / zinc coated steel joint by friction stir joining. We selected tool rotation, tool pressure and welding time as welding parameters. The observation of the interface and fracture surface revealed that liquation cracking exists near the interface. The liquation cracking seemed to be caused by remaining zinc. It was found that the shear strength of the joint becomes higher when the more zinc was successfully discharged.

It is known that metal structure influences fatigue characteristics (fatigue strength and lifetime). In this paper, three kinds of steel, of which metal structure is different, were prepared and fatigue tests were carried out. It was investigated from the results of the experiment what kind of structure is effective for fatigue characteristics. The results are shown.
