This paper presents a theory and an experiment on the effect of partial longitudinal bulkhead on the longitudinal strength of ships. The partial longitudinal bulkhead is free from the bottom as in Fig. 1 and diffusion effect is considered in theory, The following results have been obtained. (1) The effective sectional force compared with the prediction from the simple beam theory are, in the case of h_1,/H=0.42∼0.67 and L/B=2∼4, 0.8∼0.9 at h^*/h_1,=1/2, 0.9∼1.0 at h^*/h_1,=0.9 for pure bending and 0.75∼0.85 at h^*/h1,=1/2, 0.8∼0.95 at h^*/h_1,=0.9 for sine type moment gradient. (h_1, H, h^*,: Depth of longitudinal bulkhead, hull and reinforced part of longitudinal bulkhead, L: Length of hold part, B : Breadth of hull) (2) The more imperfect the structure of reinforced part at hold end is and the steeper the hold part moment gradient, the larger the deviation of the effective sectional force from the value derived by the simple beam theory is.
