In this report, the results of speed trial at free running and bollard pull trial of five pusher type tug boats equipped with two Voith-Schneider propellers (V.S.P.), which have been built at Osaka Shipbuilding Co., are described. At trials, shaft horse power, towing force and displacement of pitch indicator of V.S.P. etc. were measured. Furthermore, resistance tests on these ship forms were carried out at the experimental tank of Osaka University. From these results, propulsion factors at speed trial and towing force per 100 SHP at bollard pull trial etc. were analysed using the characteristic curves calculated by Taniguchi's approximate solution of V.S.P.

As a bearing material, the author tested the properties of glass-fibre-reinforced phenolic laminates, such as swelling, bending and shearing strength, friction coefficient under low speed and heavy load conditions. In this paper, the author reports results of the test and proposes an inspection standard of such materials, in order to minimize the deviation of their physical properties, which specifies the void contents, resin contents and the hardness of materials.

Inasmuch as the log book has been the only basis to determine the daily fresh water consumption in vessels, there have been no methods to know the maximum peak load and the detailed distribution of fresh water consumption per day. This paper gives the result and our analysis of recording of running hour of fresh water pump by an automatic recorder as fitted on Kawasaki Steamship Company's New York Liner NEVADA MARU, during the period from June 26 to October 2, 1958.

Instead of steel plates, F.R.P. plates are used partly for the fairwater construction of the "Oyashio", the first submarine built in Japan after the termination of the World War II. The American submarines built in recent years have fairwater construction entirely made of F.R.P. plates. However, the "Oyashio" is the first ship in Japan in which F.R.P. plates are used partly for hull construction. Therefore, the author gives below the outline of the specification, result of tests of material, construction method and the method and the method of fixing acrilite plates to be used in this connection.

In the case of providing a manhole for the shell of pressure vessel of every kind, the ring type reinforcement, compared with the flanged type one, is much easier to work. Therefore the ring type reinforcement is being mostly adopted. By this reason, we tried to standardize this reinforcement from the point of the rationalizing material management, reducing time required to design, and preventing from error in designing. Investigating precisely the rules of NK, LR, and AB, and refering to the specifications of JIS, ASME, BS, MOT, etc., we analyzed and considered their original meanings. As a result of the above, we have made the standard of the shell thickness of ring type reinforcement.

To design properly the piping equipment in engine room, it is necessary to have good knowledges on its actual conditions. But, about the most necessary kinds of valves, especially JIS valves, there are little datum even for the most fundamental resistance coefficients. And at present we can not but rely on resistance coefficients of Europian valves different from JIS in design. So the authors have been engaged in preliminary experimental researches on 11/2 in pipes and 40 mm valves for low pressure pipe lines, to examine inlet length, friction loss coefficients of straight pipes, the influence of directions and intervals of valves upon resistance coefficients. Then they made clear actual conditons of pipes and valves for low pressure pipe lones.
