In case of preliminary determination of ship's principal dimensions, a frequently used method is the trial and error method in which the dimensions and hull coefficients of ships are adjusted to obtain required freeboard (f) and metacentric height (GM). The author derived a new, reasonable and simple method to determine the principal dimensions dy the use of dimensionless f/d and GM/B instead of f and GM. Basic formula is GM=KB+BM-KG. From this formula, it is possible to determine Eq. (1), and then to determine principal dimensions from Eqs. (1) and (2). This process is summarized in Table 3.

One of the greatest problem for launching on the huge and full formed vessel is that the maximum piovoting load in general attains to so large value. It became sometimes over the allowable strength of berth/or standing ways/or hull construction. For the purpose of reduction of the load, the authors have adopted an new idea that intentional openings on the bottom shell plate at aft compartment of the new body of jumboizing ore/oil carrier loose its buoyancy during launching and it results in reducing the load. In this report the outline of design and the launching result are described.

It is the recent tendency that electric capacity of new ships having big power plant such as container ships or automatic operated ships has been increasing gradually, and eventually the quantity of electric cables also tends to increase to a considerable extent. While, such cables should be installed under the circumstances of labour shortage we are facing. In this paper we state below some methods of wiring with mechanical gear, application of wiring method in each compartment and improvement of cable ways and jigs and tools, and we suggest the followings; 1) It is very important to improve cable ways for the wiring. 2) Cables in cargo holds can be wired and led to penetrate bulkheads by converting watertight glands to MCT (multiple cable transit). 3) It is very important to selection wires and to improve rollers in order to avoid twisting of cables. New methods of wiring with mechanical gear are useful not only for effective preparation for the next stage work, and for design improvement of electric cable ways, etc.

For convenience in loading long cargos, the decks of heavy cargo carriers are mostly supported by frames of cantilever. As this construction is statically determinate, sufficient care must be paid in designing to the strength of corner connections of this structure. The results of an investigation into this problem are summarized as follows: (1) The effective breadth Be of cantilever deck can be expressed as follows with span l: B_e=0.35l (l/B≦2) where B:1 trans. web space (2) Stiffeners and brackets are more effective when they are inserted in principal stress direction, that is, this method reduces possibility of local buckling and increases ultimate strength. (3) As for the type of the joint, it seems that ordinary types are superior to straight type from the view point strength. However, it is also considered that the strength of the straight type can be increased by putting a bracket on the cross point.

This paper deals with the effect of irregular winds (gust) on the rope tension of the single mooring buoy system. Following the principle of linear superposition, a theoretical calculation of the rope tension of a buoy system is performed using Davenport's spectrum of gustiness in high winds. The results show that the value of the variance of the rope tension is very large owing to sharp dynamic response of the system at the vicinity of resonance. Hence, in such system, the use of the alarm is recommended and how to set the crititcal load of the alarm is suggested.
