In order to gather the loading data of container ships in service, investigation have been carried out for six container ships, the number of voyage of which amounts to twenty three in total. The summary of analysis for these data are as follows. (I) The distribution and variance of container weight in vertical and longitudinal directions have been obtained and these will be useful for future design. (II) The accuracy of approximate calculation of loading manual supplied to the ship have proved to be practicable. (III) The estimation formula of statical torsional moment due to container weight has been obtained.

Nowadays a considerable number of ships have been built, most of which have one-motion bridge control system for main engine. Several setting points for this system are taken into account according to their own experiences and then by trials and errors at the sea trial. In order to avoid such inefficiency, we have developed an easy and convenient method of designing. Namely, it is a simulation of diesel engine maneuvability including the dynamical characteristics of a ship by using a hybrid computer. This time we have tried mainly in the case of crash astern simulation and it is already confirmed by our last sea trial that the new method shows satisfactory performance to assure the estimation of the dynamical characteristics of a ship. In addition to the practical success, we are sure that the method will be developed to the DDC control of ships in the near future.

The authors have recently proposed a new method of calculation for predicting the development of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer over a ship hull and made use of a slightly modified form of the Hess-Smith's method to obtain the potential flow velocities on the hull. As an application of these procedures, the authors attempt to calculate wake distributions near the stern of the ship. The wake vector can be obtained as the uniformly valid solution which is composed of the outer potential flow and the inner boundary layer flow, both of them being the first approximations to the exact solutions. The wake vector predicted is compared with the measured values in ship models including the Series 60 parent forms. The agreement seems to be fairly good as to the longitudinal wake contours and the wake vector components projected to the sectional plane, except for the case of full ship forms in which the effects of bilge vortices cannot be neglected.

Some Notes on Approximate Methods of the Calculation of Resistance Increase of Ships in Waves

In this paper some approximate methods calculating resistance increase of ships in waves, i. e., Joosen's, Wahab's, Gerritsma's, Boese's and strip methods, are discussed. Drifting forces are calculated by these methods, but non-linear wavemaking resistances and diffraction forces are neglected. Resistance increases have been calculated for the three ship forms (Series 60 parent forms: C_B=0.8, 0.7, 0.6) and the results are compared with experimental results. It is found that the results of calculation roughly explain the experimental results, but, usually, they seem to be smaller than experimental values in fat ships and larger in slender ships. The best method for calculating resistance increase with sufficient accuracy is not yet decided.

In the design of an anti-rolling tank, deciding an effective tank form and finding out the suitable location of the tank are a very difficult problem under the restriction of the tank arrangements already fixed. Therefore, it is most important to obtain as good tank effect as possible by designing the tank and the structure member form carefully under the difficult circumstances. This report is on the Frahm type anti-rolling tank with two wing tanks for a passenger/car ferry of Lpp = 190 m and B = 27 m. Details of the tank design and the results of bench tests are described.

This is a study on the computation method for ship manoeuvring. Hydrodynamic derivatives are estimated from particulars of ships. By satisfying the correlation of predicted and experimentally determined trajectories, the standard mathematical model for ship manoeuvring is concluded. By use of this model, causes of error included in the results of turning experiments are analysed, and it is pointed out that three causes are predominant.
