The followings are to report about "Unit Bath" which has been developed and actua11y installed on large tankers built at Sakai Shipyard of Hitachi Zosen. This Unit bath was developed originally for ship's use. Its casing is a Cubic type and is made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic material. The most remarkable merit in adapting this Unit bath is to help advanced fitting out of ship's accommodation quarter and consequently to save labour. Presently three different types of standard are available and all accessairies are completely equipped in the room. Furthermore the outside casing is fitted with framing of steel angles, so that it can be installed on board as one piece.

This report presonts the experimental investigation of the dynamic pressure exerted on tank walls of ore-bulk-oil carrier by swashing internal fluid. A tank model of one fiftieth of 88,000 t O/B/O carrier was used as a basic one and for the sake of comparison one rectangular model and two O/B/O tank models with B/D ratio different from that of basic model was used. Tests were carried out by putting the model tanks on a specially designed rolling apparatus. The influencing factors, depth of fluid, tank breadth, amplitude and period of periodical motion of the tank and so on, were varied systematically. At the same time, the effectiveness of bottom-centerline swash girder abating swashing pressure was examined. The distribution of dynamical pressure on the tank side wall was measured together with the motion of tank. The experimental results were expressed with regard to the tank motion. From this experiment, we derived the experimental formula for the pressure acting on the side wall of tank and proved that bottom centerline swash girder was useful for the reduction of dynamic pressure.

The authors developed a computer program for calculation of natural frequencies of plates of arbitrary shape under various boundary conditions based on Rayleigh-Ritz method. In this paper, design charts for the estimation of natural frequencies of plates, which are often observed in actual hull structures, are provided by performing a series of calculation with the program. The vibration measurements on full scale model were also carried to compare with the calculation. From both obseved and calculated results, the authors present a method to reflect actual boundary conditions of the plate on it's natural frequencies at design stage.

A unique technique of measuring the stress of propeller blade under service condition was developed, and applied to the stress measurement of a controllable pitch propeller of an actual ship. In this report, the measuring apparatus and methods are mainly stated, outline of which is as follws; The strain gauge wire is connected from the propeller to the steering engine room through the slip-ring on the rudder-horn. The strain gauge wires are loosened between the blade and propeller boss, and the loosened wire is covered for protection from the damage by the water flow. By this unique method, the measuring can be accomplished without extracting and boring of propeller shaft. Adhesion and coating of strain gauges were studied and it was made clear that epoxy type adhesive for strain gauge adhesion and the coating by rubber type bond are best. The flexibility of the rubber type bond is especially effective to overcome the cracks in the coating even after drying. Stress measurement is conducted under the stational sea-going condition and the crash astern test. The obtained records at these tests are shown. According to these records, the double amplitude of oscillating stress of the blades is in the same extent as the mean stress.

Usua11y Maruo's method is used for the calculation of added resistance in waves. But the approximation used there to find source strength is very rough and the agreement between the theory and experiments is not necessarily good. The authors tried to apply some improvements to the calculation method and found that if the strength, position and phase of the source are determined by such a way that the progressive wave due to the source coincides with the one calculated by the correct method, then the results of some cases are improved especially in the range of short wave length.

Many high-speed vessels such as container ships equip anti-rolling tanks to reduce large rolling motion frequently experienced by them However, there exists a divergence of opinion as to the effectiveness of the tank. The cause would be perhaps oriented to the fact that the tank has usually been designed to reduce mainly the synchronous 1arge rolling motion in beam sea condition with zero speed of advance, while the actual ship operates normally in irregular and oblique seas with a speed of advance. In this paper, the rolling responses of a ship with and without an anti-rolling tank are compared for oblique, regular and irregular waves. The tank is a Frahm typed and the response of the water in the tank to the rolling of the ship is obtained by an oscillation test of the tank model. The model tests of the ship are carried out and the results are compared with those obtained by the theoretical computations based on the strip theory. A good agreement between these results is shown, and the degree of the effectiveness of the tank not only in beam sea but also in quartering waves is demonstrated. The spectra of the response in irregular seas obtained by the model tests and the linear supsrposition of the response amplitude operator are compared but the agreement is not sufficient for quartering sea conditions. The lateral accelerations accompanied by the ship motions are considered.

This paper presents the results of investigation made by model experiments for the purpose of preventing cavitation erosion that often occurs in Mariner-type rudder of contanier ship, by taking into account the effect of thickness chord ratio of rudder (t/B, where t=rudder thickness, and B=rudder chord) and the effect of twisting angle designed considering the propeller induced velocity direction on the rudder surface static pressure. The ship chosen for this investigation is of a single screw, single rudder ship with L_<pp>×B×d=200m×30m×9.5m; and V=24.7kt. The results obtained are: 1) It was made clear that there is a possibility of occurrence of cavitation-erosion, when the thickness chord ratio (t/B) is on the order of 0.27, and ship speed range is from 24 to 25 kt. 2) It is suggested that an effective countermeasure may be provided to a rudder with such a twisting angle that coincides with a direction of the propeller induced velocity.
