A thermal shock experiment was performed on the sintered alumina having a particle size distribution. From the results the fracture stress of the sample with 30% porosity was estimated to be around 0.1 GPa. The elastic modulus was calculated by a simplified model consisting of bimodal size distributions using molecular dynamics simulations. By applying these results to an actual sintered alumina, the fracture stress was estimated to be 7 GPa.
Considering the simplification of the initial molecular configuration of molecular dynamics simulations, the greement of these values was thought to be reasonable.
