: Dense aluminum silicon carbide(Al4SiC4)ceramics with a higher relative density than 95 % were fabricated by spark plasma sintering of an Al4SiC4 powder at 1800 ℃. For comparison, an Al4SiC4 ceramic was fabricated by conventional hot pressing at 1800 ℃. The density was ~ 80 %, which was lower than that of the ceramic abricated by spark plasma sintering. A strength at 1400 ℃ of the ceramic sintered by SPS was almost the same as room temperature strength of 300 MPa. The strength decreased with increasing temperature at higher than 1500 ℃. The ceramics were heat-treated at 1000 ℃ in a dry airflow up to 100 h. Weight change and oxide formation by the heat treatment were not detected. The strength after the heat treatment did not decrease, which was almost the same as a strength of sample without heat treatment. The results show that Al4SiC4 ceramic sintered by SPS can be applied at 1000 ℃ in dry air.
