    This paper relates to a transistorized and dry-battery driven crystal clock "Citizen Crystron" which has been developed in our laboratoryi, and gives an outline of this clock with an emphasis on the explanation about the driving method of the synchronous motor by which the clock is characterized. The synchronous motor is in a type of magnetic escapement, and the reed resonator which has a natural frequency is driven in synchronism with the output signal of the crystal oscillator. In the method of driving the reed, there are two principal cases as given below. Case 1; The synchronizing signal is injected into the self-oscillation circuit of the reed. Case 2; The reed is driven directly with the synchronizing signal. After the experimental researches, it has been ascertained that case l gives a better result as far as the self-starting characteristic of the reed is concerned, but its stability is worse than that in case 2. Further, in case 2, we have made an experimental Study on a comparison of the characteristic stability under two different conditions, i.e. width of the reed-driving pulse is T/2 and T/4. (T is the period of driving pulse.) According to the result, it is proved that the following merits are brought under the condition of the wider pulse. 1; Less decrease of the output torque which is accompanied with detuning of the reed's natural frequency. 2; Rarer occurrence of step-out trouble caused by noise. 3; Simpler composition of the driving circuit. The driving method in case 2 with the wider pulse. therefore, is adopted finally in this crysta1 clock.

    In this paper, a tuning fork clock having smaller cost. more stable accuracy and longe life than a conventional movement is studied. Generally, a tuning fork clock movement is more costly compared with a movement having a balance wheel and this is the greatest problem to be overcome for a tuning fork movement. The tuning fork movement in the experiment has been confirmed to have very simple construction. consequently reduced parts and has four times output torque of an average balance movement on the second hand by a same current consumption. and also the stability of time keeping depends on the variation of gear friction supposed to be very small. The experiment has brought about possibility of a tuning fork movement which has the cost as small as the one of a conventional balance movement, a higher stability and longer life.

    S type tuning pieces are considered, in this paper, to be made from straight bars by bending at two symmetrical positions relating to the center so as to form S shape. For the various S type pieces obtained by changing the positions of bending. their vibration modes are deduced theoretically, and they are made sure by the experiment. In a special shape of S type pieces, the nodal point of the vibration coincides with its center of gravity, and the angular amplitude at that point becomes very small in the result of theoretical calculation. The experiment with regard to test pieces of this type shows that they have high quality factor of 9000 or more.
