This paper describes numerical analyses of the distance-dependent gain variation that exists in gain measurements based on the Friis transmission formula for typical broadband antennas, including double-ridged guide horn and log-periodic dipole array antennas. The analyses are performed by simulating gain measurements using the method of moments with higher-order basis functions and the finite integration method. In addition, we propose approximate techniques to determine the antenna phase center by exploiting the distance dependence of the gain. Simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of using the location of the phase center to accurately determine the far-field gain at reduced antenna separation distances.

This paper focuses on the S-parameter method that is a basic method for measuring the input impedance of balanced-fed antennas. The basic concept of the method is summarized using the two-port network, and it is shown that the method can be enhanced to the unbalanced antennas using a formulation based on incident and reflected waves. The compensation method that eliminates the influence of a measurement jig and the application of the S-parameter method for the measurement of a radiation pattern with reduced unbalanced currents are explained. Further, application of the method for measuring the reflection and coupling coefficients of multiple antennas is introduced. The measured results of the input impedance of a dipole antenna, radiation patterns of a helical antenna on a small housing, and S-parameters of multiple antennas on a small housing are examined, and the measured results obtained with the S-parameter method are verified.

As new systems and applications are introduced for next-generation wireless systems, the propagation channels in which they operate need to be characterized. This paper discusses propagation channels for four types of next-generation systems: (i) distributed Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and Cooperative MultiPoint (CoMP) systems, which require the characterization of correlation between channels from a mobile station to different base stations or access points; (ii) device-to-device communications, where propagation channels are characterized by strong mobility at both link ends (e.g., in vehicle-to-vehicle communications), and/or significant impact of moving shadowing objects; (iii) full-dimensional MIMO, where antenna arrays extend in both the horizontal and vertical dimension, so that azimuthal and elevation dispersion characteristics of the channel become relevant, and (iv) millimeter wave Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and cellular communication systems, where the high carrier frequency leads to a change (compared to microwave communications) concerning which propagation processes are dominant. For each of these areas, we give an overview of measurements and models for key channel properties. A discussion of open issues and possible future research avenues is also provided.

A novel method for calibrating the probes used in standard measurement systems to evaluate SAR (specific absorption rate) of the radio equipment operating at frequencies over 3GHz is proposed. As for the proposed method, the electric-field distribution produced by a waveguide aperture installed in a liquid container is used to calibrate the SAR probe. The field distribution is shown to be the same as that given by a conventional calibration method by analytically deriving a closed-form expression for the field produced by the waveguide aperture with the help of the paraxial approximation. Comparing the approximated and measured distributions reveals that the closed-form expression is valid for the electric-field distribution near the central axis of the aperture. The calibration factor for a commercial SAR probe is evaluated by the proposed method and agrees well with that provided by the manufacturer of the probe.

Two types of 3D folded dipole antenna with feed line (FDAFL) were reported for a small terminal, which covered WiMAX 2.5/3.5GHz bands and WLAN 2.4GHz band. In this study, folded monopole antenna (FMA) is proposed as a variant of FDAFL. We show the broadband characteristics of FMA and determine the most suitable configuration of FMA array for realizing MIMO system. Also, a multiband variant is created by introducing a parasitic element to FMA. The result is a multiband FMA array with parasitic elements operating at 5GHz band of WiMAX and WLAN as well as WiMAX 2.5/3.5GHz bands and WLAN 2.4GHz band with total antenna efficiency of between 70% to 96% and the envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.02. Finally, a prototype antenna is implemented, and we confirm the validity of the simulation by comparison to measured results.

This paper proposes a new small multiband printed antenna for wireless telecommunications modules that can realize Machine-to-Machine applications. We reconfigure our previous antenna to cover the 700MHz, 800MHz, and 900MHz bands, and add two new elements (second strips) to cover the 2GHz band. The new antenna achieves operation in quad-bands: 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, and 2GHz. Frequency characteristics are analyzed using electromagnetic-simulation software based on the method of moments, and the validity of the numerical results is shown based on measured Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) characteristics and the radiation patterns of a prototype antenna. The proposed antenna is compact with a VSWR bandwidth (≤2) of 27.5% in bands including 700MHz, 800MHz, and 900MHz, and a VSWR bandwidth (≤2) of 10.6% in the band including 2GHz. We clarify that the operating mechanism in the 2GHz band is equivalent to that of a one wavelength folded offset fed dipole antenna comprising a monopole element and second strips, and that the operating frequency in the 2GHz band can be determined by the path length from the tip of the monopole element to the tip of the second strip via a feeding point.

This paper presents the design and radiation properties of a linearly polarized radial line microstrip antenna array (RL-MSAA) with U-slot circular microstrip antennas. A circular microstrip antenna (C-MSA) with U-shaped slot is used as a radiation element of the RL-MSAA. Radiation phase of the U-slot C-MSA is controlled by tuning the radius of the C-MSA and dimensions of the U-slot on the C-MSA; therefore, the desired phase distribution of the RL-MSAA can be realized. In this paper, a linearly polarized RL-MSAA with three concentric rows of C-MSAs at a spacing of 0.65 wavelengths is designed for 12GHz operation. In order to realize uniform phase distribution, the U-slot C-MSAs are arranged for inner two rows and normal C-MSAs are arranged for the termination row. Validity of the linearly polarized RL-MSAA with the U-slot C-MSAs for radiation phase control is demonstrated by simulation and measurement.

The higher-order characteristic basis function method (HO-CBFM) is clearly formulated. HO-CBFM provides results accurately even if a block division is arbitrary. The HO-CBFM combined with a volume integral equation (VIE) is used in the analysis of various antennas in the vicinity of a dielectric object. The results of the numerical analysis show that the HO-CBFM can reduce the CPU time while still achieving the desired accuracy.

Soil moisture retrieval from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery over forested terrain is quite a challenging problem, because the radar backscatter is affected by not only the moisture content, but also by large vegetation structures such as the trunks and branches. Although a large number of algorithms which exploit radar backscatter to infer soil moisture have been developed, most of them are limited to the case of bare soil or little vegetation cover that an incident wave can easily reach the soil surface without serious disturbance. However, natural land surfaces are rarely free from vegetation, and the disturbance in radar backscatter must be properly compensated to achieve accurate soil moisture measurement in a diversity of terrain surfaces. In this paper, a simple polarimetric parameter, co-polarized backscattering ratio, is shown to be a criterion to infer moisture content of forested terrain, from both a theoretical forest scattering simulation and an appropriate experimental validation under well-controlled condition. Though modeling of forested terrain requires a number of scattering mechanisms to be taken into account, it is essential to isolate them one by one to better understand how soil moisture affects a specific and principal scattering component. For this purpose, we consider a simplified microwave scattering model for forested terrain, which consists of a cloud of dielectric cylinders as a representative of trunks, vertically stood on a flat dielectric soil surface. This simplified model can be considered a simple boreal forest model, and it is revealed that the co-polarization ratio in the ground-trunk double-bounce backscattering can be an useful index to monitor the relative variation in the moisture content of the boreal forest.

We construct two types of reverberation chambers, one is 4(m) × 2(m) × 2(m)-sized and the other is 2(m) × 2(m) × 2(m)-sized for realizing a multipath-rich environment for MIMO-OTA measurements. In this paper, we measure fundamental propagation characteristics, including amplitude statistics, multipath-delay statistics, spatial correlation characteristics, and cross polarization characteristics over a frequency range of 800MHz to 5GHz in our reverberation chamber. Also, we confirm the existence of spatially uniform area of 1m2 area, which might be sufficiently large to set a device under test (DUT) in the chamber. Theoretical considerations about the characteristics are also given to support the design of reverberation chamber.

A path loss model for low antenna heights below surrounding buildings in residential areas is presented to contribute to the construction of VHF band wireless systems. The model is constructed on the basis of measurement results at 167.65MHz, near center frequency at VHF band. Path loss characteristics in the middle VHF band are compared to those in bands above UHF. The dominant paths in bands above UHF include propagation paths below surrounding buildings, such as paths along roads. However, in the middle VHF band, these paths are instantly attenuated because their 1st Fresnel zone radius is larger than the average building height or road width. The dominant path in the middle VHF band is the over-roof propagation path, and the 1st Fresnel zone of the path is shielded by the buildings and the ground surface. The proposed path loss model has two features. First, it derives the effective height of the ground surface from the terrain profile of the buildings and the ground surface. Second, it uses formulas of a two-path model to take the shielding of the 1st Fresnel zone into account. Finally, it is shown that the proposed model is able to predict the path loss measurement results more accurately than the conventional model.

We have proposed an intruder detection method by using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. Although the channel capacity for MIMO transmission is severely degraded in time-variant channels, we can take advantage of this feature in MIMO sensor applications. For MIMO sensors, the accurate estimation of channel state information (CSI) is essential. Moreover, the transceiver should be simplified from the viewpoint of saving power. Narrowband signals such as minimum shift keying (MSK) and offset quaternary phase shift keying signals are effective and are used in sensor network systems. However, because the timing and carrier offsets between the transmitter and receiver are relatively large compared to the symbol rate, accurate CSI estimation is impossible given the severe constraints imposed by the timing and carrier offsets. To solve this issue, a signal synchronization method for the CSI estimation using a narrowband MSK signal has been proposed. In this paper, we propose a new CSI estimation method for arbitrary amplitude and phase modulation schemes for the MIMO sensor. The key point of the proposed method is that control signals (unique words) are mapped so as not to pass through the origin of the complex I/Q plane. The estimation accuracy of the proposed method is evaluated via a computer simulation. Moreover, the basic performance by the proposed CSI estimation method is verified when considering intruder detection by MIMO sensor.

Much attention has recently been paid to direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using compressed sensing (CS) techniques, which are sparse signal reconstruction methods. In our previous study, we developed a method for estimating the DOAs of multi-band signals that uses CS processing and that is based on the assumption that incident signals have the same complex amplitudes in all the bands. That method has a higher probability of correct estimation than a single-band DOA estimation method using CS. In this paper, we propose novel DOA estimation methods for multi-band signals with frequency characteristics using the Khatri-Rao product. First, we formulate a method that can estimate DOAs of multi-band signals whose phases alone have frequency dependence. Second, we extend the scheme in such a way that we can estimate DOAs of multi-band signals whose amplitudes and phases both depend on frequency. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed methods through computer simulations and reveal the improvement in estimation performance.

Multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) improves the system channel capacity by employing the transmission between a base station and multiple user terminals (UTs). Block Diagonalization (BD) has been proposed in order to realize MU-MIMO broadcast transmission. The BD algorithm cancels inter-user interference by creating the weights so that the channel matrixes for the other users are set to be zero matrixes. However, when the number of transmit antennas is equals to the total number of received antennas, the transmission rate by the BD algorithm is decreased. This paper proposes a new antenna selection method at the UTs to reduce the number of nulls for the other users except an intended user by the BD algorithm. It is verified via bit error rate (BER) evaluation that the proposed method is effective compared to the conventional BD algorithm, especially, when the number of users is increased with a low bit rate. Moreover, this paper evaluates the transmission rate based on IEEE802.11ac standard when considering BD algorithm with ideal user scheduling. Although the number of equivalent receive antenna is only one by the proposed method when the number of antennas at the the UT is two, it is shown that the transmission rate by the proposed method is higher than that by the conventional BD algorithm when the SNR is low even in the condition on user scheduling.

This paper presents a spatial fading emulator for evaluating handset MIMO antennas in a cluster environment. The proposed emulator is based on Clarke's model and has the ability to control RF signals directly in spatial domain to generate an accurate radio propagation channel model, which includes both uniform and non-uniform angular power spectra (APS) in the horizontal plane. Characteristics of a propagation channel such as fading correlations, eigenvalues and MIMO channel capacities of handset antennas located in the vicinity of the emulator's ring can be evaluated. The measured results show that the fading emulator with 31 antenna probes is sufficient to evaluate fading correlation and MIMO channel capacity of handset antenna in the case of a narrow APS with the standard deviation of more than 20 degrees.

The performance in terms of the user separation of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) depends on not only the spatial correlation but also the location of the mobile stations (MSs). In order to take into account the performance in terms of the user separation, we need to consider the granularity of the beam and null width of the precoded antenna pattern in addition to the spatial correlation to determine the base station (BS) antenna configuration. In this paper, we propose Smart Vertical MIMO (SV-MIMO) as the best antenna configuration that achieves both spatial correlation and granularity of the beam and null width of the precoded antenna pattern. We evaluate SV-MIMO in a field experiment using a downlink 4-by-2 MU-MIMO configuration focusing on the dependency of the location of the MSs in Yokosuka, Japan. The majority of the measurement course is under line-of-sight (LOS) conditions in a single cell environment. The MSs are almost uniformly set 30 to 60 degrees in azimuth and 12 to 30 degrees in elevation and the distance from the BS antennas is approximately 150m at maximum. We also evaluate the performance of 4-by-2 MU-MIMO using the conventional type of horizontal array antenna and show the difference. The field experimental results show that throughput of greater than 1Gbps is achieved at the Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of 14% by employing SV-MIMO for Rank-4 MU-MIMO. The throughput of SV-MIMO is 30% higher than that for the horizontal array antenna configuration at the CDF of 50%.

With the advent of high speed links, online flow measurement for, e.g., flow round trip time (RTT), has become difficult due to the enormous demands placed on computational resources. Most existing measurement methods are designed to count the numbers of flows or sizes of flows, but we address the flow RTT measurement, which is an important QoS metric for network management and cannot be measured with existing measurement methods. We first adapt a standard Bloom Filter (BF) for the flow RTT distribution estimation. However, due to the existence of multipath routing and Syn flooding attacks, the standard BF does not perform well. We further design the double-deletion bloom filter (DDBF) scheme, which alleviates potential hash collisions of the standard BF by explicitly deleting used records and implicitly deleting out-of-date records. Because of these double deletion operations, the DDBF accurately estimates the RTT distribution of TCP flows with limited memory space, even with the appearance of multipath routing and Syn flooding attacks. Theoretical analysis indicates that the DDBF scheme achieves a higher accuracy with a constant and smaller amount of memory compared with the standard BF. In addition, we validate our scheme using real traces and demonstrate significant memory-savings without degrading accuracy.

Information-centric networking (ICN) is a promising architecture and has attracted much attention in the area of future Internet architectures. As one of the key technologies in ICN, in-network caching can enhance content retrieval at a global scale without requiring any special infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a workload-aware caching policy, LRU-GT, which allows cache nodes to protect newly cached contents for a period of time (guard time) during which contents are protected from being replaced. LRU-GT can utilize the temporal locality and distinguish contents of different popularity, which are both the characteristics of the workload. Cache replacement is modeled as a semi-Markov process under the Independent Reference Model (IRM) assumption and a theoretical analysis proves that popular contents have longer sojourn time in the cache compared with unpopular ones in LRU-GT and the value of guard time can affect the cache hit ratio. We also propose a dynamic guard time adjustment algorithm to optimize the performance. Simulation results show that LRU-GT can reduce the average hops to get contents and improve cache hit ratio.

In the digital terrestrial TV broadcasting system, it is important to evaluate both quantitative levels and sources of overreach interference, because it can degrade the TV service quality. This paper newly proposes an overreach measurement method that simultaneously monitors RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) and CNR (Carrier to Noise power Ratio) of the TV waves and RSSI of FM waves. The results of measurements conducted in Hiroshima prefecture show that our proposed method can evaluate the level of overreach interference in the TV waves and also identify the source of the interference. Total 43 overreach interference events were found in the proposed method from one-year measurement in 2012. Based on M profile data, this paper also shows that the main factor of the overreach interference in this measurement is duct propagation due to meteorological condition.

As the electromagnetic (EM) environment is becoming increasingly diverse, it is essential to estimate specific absorption rates (SARs) and temperature elevations of pregnant females and their fetuses under various exposure situations. This study presents calculated SARs and temperature elevations in a fetus exposed to EM waves. The calculations involved numerical models for the anatomical structures of a pregnant Japanese woman at gestational stages of 13, 18, and 26 weeks; the EM source was a wireless portable terminal placed close to the abdomen of the pregnant female model. The results indicate that fetal SARs and temperature elevations are closely related to the position of the fetus relative to the EM source. We also found that, although the fetal SAR caused by a half-wavelength dipole antenna is sometimes comparable to or slightly more than the International Commission Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guidelines, it is lower than the guideline level in more realistic situations, such as when a planar inverted-F antenna is used. Furthermore, temperature elevations were significantly below the threshold set to prevent the child from being born with developmental disabilities.

This paper aims to achieve a high-quality exposure level quantification of whole-body average-specific absorption rates (WBA-SARs) for small animals in a medium-size reverberation chamber (RC). A two-step method, which incorporates the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical solutions with electric field measurements in an RC-type exposure system, has been used as an evaluation method to determine the whole-body exposure level in small animals. However, there is little data that quantitatively demonstrate the validity and accuracy of this method in an RC up to now. In order to clarify the validity of the two-step method, we compare the physical quantities in terms of electric field strength and WBA-SARs by using a direct numerical assessment method known as the method of moments (MoM) with ten homogenous gel phantoms placed in an RC with 2GHz exposure. The comparison results show that the relative errors between the two-step method and the MoM approach are approximately below 10%, which reveals the validity and usefulness of the two-step technique. Finally, we perform a dosimetric analysis of the WBA-SARs for anatomical mouse models with the two-step method and determine the input power related to our developed RC-exposure system to achieve a target exposure level in small animals.

This paper analyzes the transmission performances of visible light communication (VLC) based on unipolar orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which is compatible with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD). Three existing unipolar OFDM schemes, namely DC biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM), asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), and flip-OFDM are investigated and compared. While these three schemes have been analyzed for indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) subject to the limitation on the transmit optical power, they have not been carefully investigated and compared for VLC when a large transmit power is available due to the illumination requirement, and the signal dynamic range (DR) becomes the main limitation. For the analysis, DR expressions of DCO-OFDM, ACO-OFDM, and flip-OFDM signals are first derived. Then, the bit error rate (BER) expression of each unipolar OFDM scheme is derived in terms of the DR. For data rates in the range of 1-10Mbps, under the system parameters based on typical indoor environments, DCO-OFDM is observed to outperform the other two schemes. This superiority of DCO-OFDM is in contrast with previously reported results that indicate the attractiveness of ACO-OFDM and flip-OFDM over DCO-OFDM when the transmit optical power is the main limitation. Finally, light dimming is considered to identify the illumination level below which DCO-OFDM loses this superiority.

The proposed algorithm utilizes the correlation properties of the ranging codes to resolve the multipath components, coherently combines the initial ranging signal of resolved path on each receiving antenna to maximize the output signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio, and then collects the power of the multipath signals to detect the states of the ranging codes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has much better performance than the available noncoherent combining method, and can accommodate more active ranging users simultaneously in each cell.

To lengthen the operational time of mobile devices, power must be managed effectively. To achieve this objective, a Discontinuous Reception (DRX) mechanism is proposed for use in the long-term evolution (LTE) network to enable user equipment (UE) to consume power efficiently. The DRX mechanism provides parameters related to base stations such as evolved Node B (eNB) to configure and manage the transition of UEs between idle (sleep) and active states. Although these parameters can be adjusted dynamically in cooperation with the traffic scheduler, a high signaling overhead and processing load might be introduced in practical deployment if the parameters are adjusted too frequently. In this study, to examine power-saving efficiency, distinct traffic types were scheduled that were constrained by various quality of service (QoS) factors without dynamically changing the DRX parameters. The concept of burst-based scheduling is proposed, based on considering the state transitions and channel conditions of each UE, to increase power-saving efficiency while concurrently satisfying the desired QoS. Both Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and video-stream traffic models were exhaustively simulated to examine the performance of the proposed scheme and numerous scheduling alternatives were tested to compare the proposed scheme with other schemes. The simulation results indicate that video-streaming traffic is more sensitive to the scheduling schemes than HTTP traffic. The simulation results were further analyzed in terms of traffic scheduling and parameter adjustment and the analysis results can help design future studies on power management in the LTE network.

In dense femtocell networks (DFNs), one of the main issues is interference management since interference between femtocell access points (FAPs) reduces the system performance significantly. Further, FAPs serve different numbers of femtocell user equipments (FUEs), i.e., some FAPs have more than one FUE while others have one or no FUEs. Therefore, for DFNs, an intelligent channel assignment scheme is necessary considering both the number of FUEs connected to the same FAPs and interference mitigation to improve system performance. This paper proposes a two-stage dynamic channel assignment (TS-DCA) scheme for downlink DFNs based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access/frequency division duplex (OFDMA/FDD). In stage 1, using graph coloring algorithm, a femtocell gateway (FGW) first groups FUEs based on an interference graph that considers different numbers of FUEs per FAP. Then, in stage 2, the FGW dynamically assigns subchannels to FUE clusters according to the order of maximum capacity of FAP clusters. In addition, FAPs adaptively assign remaining subchannels in FUE clusters to their FUEs in other FUE clusters. Through simulations, we first find optimum parameters of the FUE clustering to maximize the system capacity and then evaluate system performance in terms of the mean FUE capacity, unsatisfied FUE probability, and mean FAP transmission energy consumption according to the different numbers of FUEs and FAPs with a given FUE traffic load.

To enhance the throughput of wireless local area networks (WLANs) by efficiently utilizing the radio resource, a distributed coordination function-based (DCF-based) orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) WLAN system has been proposed. In the system, since each OFDMA sub-channel is assigned to the associated station with the highest channel gain, the transmission rate of DATA frames can be enhanced thanks to multi-user diversity. However, the optimum allocation of OFDMA sub-channels requires the estimation of channel state information (CSI) of all associated stations, and this incurs excessive signaling overhead. As the number of associated stations increases, the signaling overhead severely degrades the throughput of DCF-based OFDMA WLAN. To reduce the signaling overhead while obtaining a sufficient diversity gain, this paper proposes a channel access scheme that performs multiple DCF-based channel access. The key idea of the proposed scheme is to introduce additional DCF-based prioritized access along with the traditional DCF-based random access. In the additional DCF-based prioritized access, by dynamically adjusting contention window size according to the CSI of each station, only the stations with better channel state inform their CSI to the access point (AP), and the signaling overhead can be reduced while maintaining high multi-user diversity gain. Numerical results confirm that the proposed channel access scheme enhances the throughput of OFDMA WLAN.

An efficient subcarrier allocation scheme of a supporting cell is proposed to recover the communication of faulty cell users in an OFDM-based wireless system. With the proposed subcarrier allocation scheme, the number of subcarriers allocated to faulty cell users is maximized while the average throughput of supporting cell users is maintained at a desired level. To find the maximum number of subcarriers allocated to faulty cell users, the average throughput of the subcarrier with the k-th smallest channel gain in a subcarrier group is derived by an inductive method. It is shown by simulation that the proposed subcarrier allocation scheme can provide more subcarriers to faulty cell users than the random selection subcarrier allocation scheme.
