This system allows noise power reduction in video signal transmission. The basic technique is a non-linear companding. The dynamic range of non-linear companding limits the processed signal amplitude. Employment of a signal predictor solves the dynamic range problem of the compander.

We propose a measurement method of the delay time between a signal and its ghost component. The differential component is extracted from a received video signal, and a autocorrelation coefficient is obtained with the SAW Convolver. The delay time of ghost is measured by method in comparison with two autocorrelation coefficients.

The TDO III enables us to measure three basic ocular functions - accommodation, eye movement, pupil diameter - simultaneously during an actual visual work. The TVS can present targets independently to the both eyes, varying directions, distance, varieties and luminance of targets. Accommodation affected by direction and size of the targets was measured using the TDO III and the TVS.

The accommodation responses of the subjects viewing a binocular stereoscopic TV program were measured with TDO III (Three-Dimensional Optometer III). The program was produced with two Hi-Vision cameras and VTR's and converted into NTSC format. A field sequential stereoscopic display with a liquid crystal shutter was used to present the program to four emmetropic subjects. The results show that scenes with sudden change of pictures and ones containing objects appearing nearer than the screen cause large accommodation responses.

We investigated whether the visibility of upper surface of a cylinder causes any change in binocular fixation points while gazing at its rim. The experimental results show that fixation points in visible case are not the same as in invisible case. We conjecture that the human visual system has a mechanism shifting the fixation point, which is driven by perceiving either occlusion or 3D shape of a cylinder.

We investigated the ability to match finger orientation to the direction of the axis of rotation in various structure-from-motion (SFM) displays. These SFM displays included full rotations of a group of points, the profiles of a rotating ellipsoid and 2-views of a group of points. The results showed that subjects were best at the full rotations. For profile and two-view displays subjects could report the slant of the axis of rotation but could accurately report the tilt only when the axis was nearly perpendicular to the view direction.

This spatio-temporal model can quantitatively simulate spatio-temporal visual responses (contrast sensitivity characteristics) to flickering or drifting sinusoidal waves. In this paper, it is shown that this model can calculate the drifting speed at the maximum contrast sensitivity and that this theoretical relations are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

To clarify the stereopsis disturbance in patients with Alzheimer's disease, we analyzed vergence eye movemenet when subjects fused a field sequential stereoscopic image. We have already analyzed vergence eye movement with real stimuli and got a result that AD patients showed unstable, unproper vergence eye movements. In this study, the stereoscopic image moved abruptly between crossed and uncrossed disparity in every 5 seconds, and the change of disparity was 1 degree. Healthy controls showed typical vergence eye movement but the response was slightly slow and large in change of convergence angle in older subjects. As for patients with Alzheimer's disease, they tended to show similar responses to the older healthy controls, and all AD patients except one moderate patient showed disparity induced vergence eye movement in proper directions.

In this paper, we propose a method to analyze blooming picture by using partial auto-correlation. The partial auto-correlation is defined in statistics, and calculated with forward linear prediction and backward linear prediction. And that is correlation of prediction residual, in place of direct correlation between time series. In blooming picture, the original image doesn't converge on focus, and divergence beam overlaps each other. This situation shows optical convolution, and expresses that aberration is generated by optical filter. Therefore we estimate the impulse response of the optical fillter by using the partial auto-correlation, and analyze a blooming picture.
