The phrasal verb take in has various meanings, such as `to lead (someone) or carry (something) indoors or into a room,' `to receive (someone) in one's home with welcome, as a guest,' `to believe (something false),'`to deceive (someone)' and so on. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify how literal meanings develop into metaphorical meanings.
This paper will compare and contrast two different lesson plans used to teach the same grammar point. One is a discovery type and the other uses a more traditional deductive approach. Reasons will be offered for choice of authentic text used, and problems faced by students will be discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of both lesson plans will be analyzed and suggestions will be offered on why it is important to take into consideration the views and needs of students in each individual class.
