Considering future intergenerational exchange in
Japan, we introduced sixteen projects that were
once practiced at the Center for Intergenerational
Learning (directed by Dr. Nancy Henkin) at Temple
University as well as show some recent Japanese
practices. First of all, the Center for
Intergenerational Learning at Temple University
was founded in 1980 to promote intergenerational
collaboration and exchange by providing innovative
cross-age programs, training and technical support,
and by disseminating materials. It played a
significant role in intergenerational exchange
programs not only in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
but also nationwide (it is currently been reorganized
mainly for university students). Regarding recent
practices in Japan, the programs reported in issues
18 and 19 of Intergenerational exchange between
Older Adults, Youth and Children magazine,
published by JIUA (Japan Intergenerational Unity
Association), a sister organization of the JSIS (Japan
Society for Intergenerational Studies), were used for
reference. We hope that a variety of grassroot
programs develop based on the needs of each region
and are put into future practice of intergenerational
exchange in Japan.
