    The research area of Design Science has dual structure. One is for a modern profession in consumer society, the other is for designing as a human essential behavior. As the results of enormous consuming, the consumer society hit the wall. The social economy cannot maintain itself without increasing consumption but it makes resource lacking and eco-catastrophe. Design science should be sensible to this situation and should start to build up next generation design theory with critical standpoint to existing design professions.

    In the styling design, a mathematical formulation of the macroscopic feature that emerges from the total of shape elements is important. However, the mathematical formulation of macroscopic feature is difficult using conventional microscopic shape information such as dimension and curvature. We examined the mathematical formulation of macroscopic feature "complexity." This paper describes the guideline for mathematical formulation of macroscopic feature in consideration of "circumstance" and "boundary," and the cognition experiment for the mathematical formulation of macroscopic feature "complexity."

    We conducted cognitive research concerning the design of public information symbols for tactile perception. Offering element E, a curve C, a line L, as 3 attributes to 7 basic figures of line-drawing pictures, we analyzed by Multiple Regression Analysis how they were easy to understand for the Blind people with the simplified samples. As a result, we found that women, dogs and cars were affected by a line count, that children men and planes by a curvilinear count, and that deer by Element count, and we also knew the desirable degree of simplification by this research. Moreover to create more comprehensible design we have tried the design with higher theoretical figure. As a result, we have confirmed that high theoretical figure does not affect lucidity. According to the result of a general tendency through standardizing of data, the fact that a plus reaction has been made by increasing of both a curve and a line has been verified. The result of this research, hereafter, will be valuable as certain utility in the design framing of public information Symbols for tactile perception.

  • Effect of Emotional Image and Viewpoint Externalized From Others

    There are three main issues when trying to capture the customer's need for a product's emotional quality such as its aesthetics. The first is that customers have difficulty externalizing their emotional needs even if they have a clear mental image of those needs. The second is that people have different sensitivities when perceiving emotional qualities. The third is that customers have a latent sensitivity of which they are unaware. Evoking such latent sensitivity is effective when extracting the customer's potential needs. Latent sensitivity may be evoked by shifting a fixed viewpoint for evaluating an emotional quality. In this paper, we focus on the third issue, which has not been dealt with in conventional studies. The authors address the question of how to provide information that can shift the customer's fixed viewpoint and evoke his/her latent sensitivities on a product's emotional quality. To determine what factors are involved in such information, we conduct an experiment in which the subjects exchange and mutually evaluate their shape solutions for an emotional image and the associated viewpoints. Because people have different sensitivities, customers have different viewpoints and images toward an emotional design concept as expressed by a subjective word. We assume that different viewpoints and images may contain information that can evoke the latent sensitivity of a customer. To help the subjects to externalize their images for a given emotional concept, which is the first issue, we developed an interactive shape generation system in which the customer as non-designer can easily shape his/her image. The system generates design samples, which the user synthesizes using genetic operation. From the experiment, we observed different types of subjects and different patterns of effective viewpoints that can shift one's fixed viewpoint.

    This paper proposes an Ikebana support system considering sense of beauty. The system operates based on the framework of interactive evolutionary computation. If a design matches the aesthetic criteria, it is considered as a beautiful design. We also evaluate designs due to their novelty. A little change of the whole design affect its beauty. We considered the beauty features and applied them to the proposed system. It has sufficient number of kakis and kazais: the number of kaki is 21 and that of kazai is 298.

    In this research, we describe new way of learning environment design in cultural facilities, taking our attempt that was held in zoo and aquarium as an example. In the attempt, we reconstructed exhibits as whole new learning environment for visitors so that visitors are able to join the exhibition. Especially, we adopted several information technology facilities, such as mobile technology, network technology, sound and video contents so that we can offer users a whole-new user experience.

  • Comparison research on visibility research of head up display

    The purpose of the research is the head up display's visibility experiment, and the difference of the visibility of the Japanese and the Europe and America people is clarified.
    The testee was a teacher, a student at Sophia University, and it did for 60 total people such as 24 Americans, 9 Germans, 8 British, and 4 Suaden people.
    The experiment method measured the time that was able to be recognized after Snellen's chart that set three levels per five factor "Angle of depression", "Brightness contrast", "Display distance", "Display size", and " Display color " was made, and displayed. "Brightness contrast" and "Display size" influenced the visibilities most.
    When the experiment results of the Japanese and the Europe and America people were compared, "Brightness contrast" and "Display size" influenced the visibilities most. However, it was clarified that the Europe and America people was sensitive to the size and the brightness change though the Japanese tended to like "Brightness contrast" high.

    In the early process of design, diverse ideas of design must be obtained from global solution search under the constraint of unclear design conditions. On the other hand, in the late process of design, a unique solution is obtained from local solution search under the constraint of clear design conditions. In this study, the concept of "Emergent design" and "Optimum design" that are the artifact design that can be applied to such the early process of design and the late process of design is shown. In addition, each applicable conditions and applicable design problems are shown.

    Emergent property is one of promising traits in synthetic methods for product design and getting a number of attentions year by year. In earlier days, however, it was argued in a context of vitalism and not deemed as scientific concept. Nowadays it is perceived as rational idea of modern system's theory result of continuous researches in physics, chemistry, biology and information theory. And computer simulation has been enabling remarkable emergent properties in virtual worlds. In this report, we look at basis of emergent properties and its models and provide a viewpoint of further works.

    Recently, the opportunity of collaborative work with a remote place is increasing in development of an industrial product by globalization. It is said that remote collaborative work can cut down product development time and cost since it can reduce movement of the development persons concerned. Until now, researches which support the lower stream of a product development process are done, but the research which supports the upstream process is not done yet. Making decisions early in the upstream can reduce more time and cost. Then, in this research, the system which supports the remote collaborative work of a conceptual design as the upstream of a product development process was built.

    The effects on a method to remind users of activity image with scene in participative designing were demonstrated in experimental design process. The authors conducted park design workshop at Tokiwa direct in Soja-city, Okayama prefecture. In design workshop, participants answered questionnaire. As results, the method had positive effects on an understanding of particle and total activity image, satisfaction, consensus building and short design process.

    For an automobile which moves at high speed, aerodynamics design is essential design technique to reduce aerodynamic drag and lift. In recent years, every automotive manufacturer focuses aerodynamics design again for solving environmental problems. Looking back on aerodynamics design history with considering its needs and attractiveness, a prospect of aerodynamics design and a desired automotive design process will be brought under review in this paper. Additionally, examples of recent aerodynamics design techniques will be discussed with brand new Nissan GT-R.

    Robust design is the design that guarantees robust performance in manufacturing variation of products and diverse use environment. In the earlier study, a robust design method which is applicable to diverse design problems was proposed. And the proposed robust design method was applied to the non-adjustable mechanism and established. But in the case of the adjustable mechanism, the proposed method has not been established. In this study, the evaluation method of robustness and the calculation method of optimum adjustment range that enable the adjustable mechanism design was proposed. And the proposed method was applied to a public seat design and established.

    This research was conducted on the user needs classified by type of a train stop of LRT which attracts attention in recent years. A terminal type, a residential section type, and the requirements in tourist resort type a train stop according to type for which a user needs were clarified in questionnaire investigation and a measurement survey to Hiroshima Electric Railway which began to introduce LRT vehicles with Toyama LRT and the longest orbital scale in Japan which some-years-ago establishment is carried out and attract attention. It took into consideration from a barrier-free new law, road conditions, or the user purpose, and the requirements for a suitable train stop were considered to the user.

    The talent of the product development such as planners and designers of the small and medium-sized enterprise and the regional industrial goods manufacturer may not be developed and have enough the budget of the development cost. The objective of research is to develop products effectively by extracting concept that was extracted from inspiration and experience of planners and designers before from a scientific viewpoint. We use 3 Point Task Analysis and Interpretive Structural Modeling Method and The Structured Concept. The work that I judged by inspiration and the experience decreased by putting these methods together and was able to decide a concept effectively. The small and medium-sized enterprise and the regional industrial goods manufacturer, the development of the products with the originality will be necessary more while diversification of the user needs advances. Changing user needs into a concept efficiently and developing products is thought that I become one means to survive.

    Some interface designers are thought to create ideas by referring to their interactive experience: memories accumulated by observing the behavior of humans in their daily lives. The Found Behavior method focuses it on the observation based on this idea. This study aims the following, 1) Making of experience type program to apply FB method to UI design study exchange, 2) Execution and verification of workshop. The observation is divided as follows, 1) Discovery of inventiveness in the person's activity in situation, 2) Discovery of person's habit. As a result, the participant came to be able to explain grounds of the design conception specifying it. The workshop where FB method was used seems for a constant effect to have existed though is not an immediate effect.

    Four companies design department of the same profession world (CRX project) carried out the learning interchange workshop of the User Interface (= UI) design method. We had the problem solution necessity of the learning interchange, and the purpose. We needed the methodology to the UI design power. We discovered and settled the limitation of the subject, during this plan. We heard the comment of the person who participated in this workshop and judged result. We knew the important to make the agreement formation between companies older to do this workshop. We would like to examine the expansion of the participation company and learning interchange of different methodology in future.

    A disaster prevention card is an effective and helpful tool to reduce the damage from natural disaster. It contains personal information such as owner's name, address, telephone number, blood type, sex, and chronic illness. Also it will give you vital information about refuges, shelter action when disaster occurred, and other useful information that defends your life from natural disaster. In this study, I paid attention to the effectiveness of a disaster prevention card, and researched the importance of various kinds of information on the cards issued by City government office in Japan. Finally, I found four categories of the card functions, and made three prototypes of the disaster prevention card, and executed user survey of them.

    In this research, the interface design that the university student naturally obtains information in daily life is developed. We have been understood that student's concern is low of event information and inform of the university from the result of the questionnaire to the student. However, such information is very valuable. To use information effectively, we proposes the interface design. The user doesn't retrieve the proposed interface design, and there is a necessity for login the system. Only because the screen displayed with the projector is confirmed, necessary event information can be obtained.

    This paper describes a method for precise color rendering for design based on 3D reflection model and surface spectral reflectance. Knowing reflection properties of the material of which an object surface is made is very important for color image rendering in design. In order to reproduce precise color of the observed object, we use physical surface reflectance information as device independent object surface properties. Then the rendering system is developed based on human visual sensitivity and physical surface properties of the object for precise color reproduction. Moreover, the rendering system is implemented on GPU for improving performance.

    This research propses a new design methodology focusing on the meaning structure. The presented methodology is based on the structure of meanings in the design process. The search and evaluation of meanings form the foundations of developing this structure ofmeanings. In order to facilitate the use and operation of the meanings, the WordNet lexical database is used. An existing visualization of WordNet is used for the process of meaning search. The WordNet::Similarity software for the measure of the relatedness of meanings in this database is the basic tool used for the evaluation process.

    It has been reported that it is possible for the upstream design stage to lead to new inventions, by combining existing knowledge based on designers' experiences, know-how, and intuition. It is necessary to formulate designer's reasoning act, and introduce the reasoning rule that generates a new function by using language function representation framework. In this paper, the formulation of the reasoning rule is tried by examining the context of the function structure of the home electronics that seems to have been generated by the function synthesis. As a result of the analysis, it has been understood that 2 functions be able to synthesize by using 9 kinds of reasoning rules.

    On stage, imagining future events in a story using dramaturgy impress audiences. However, the mechanism which audiences are impressed isn't known. This research addresses the clarification of the process of impression formation to achieve the effect of feeling about future events using the lighting. Kansei evaluation experiment using photographs was performed to investigate the impression of the lighting. As a result, the distance between the photographs and the qualificatives was plotted. We tested this result on the stage.

    In this paper, we research the design process of product packaging which takes into account the appearance of the product. We take into account the viewpoint of marketing in inside a shop especially in a retail store. The Scenario-Based Design technique adopted in recent years is used in that case. The type of Design is one approach which supports the creative thinking of a design by describing a user situation as a scenario. Therefore, it goal is the proposal of the design methodology of a new scenario base which takes into account the appearance of the product.

    The theme of this research is the Iwayodo Chest which is a traditional furniture of Iwate Prefecture. Due to a decline in local demand, a new design of the chest has been proposed with the prospect of selling it abroad. Because it is impossible to reassemble most Japanese traditional furniture, the cost of shipping them is high. As a result of this, the retail price is high and finding new business opportunities for such goods is difficult. The cheapest cost of shipping would be for the end users to carry the goods themselves from Japan (Air Port). This paper will discuss an attempt to develop Japanese traditional furniture that can be assembled so that the end users can easily carry the components on a plane.

    This paper examine it for the formation a design impression based on associative concepts of the existent concepts. To investigate a structures of assoviative concepts, this research carried out the examination with inquireries. JIS Z 8721 standard color chart was used, and 22 subjects participated in the experiment.The attribute (hue, saturation, brightness) of the color were statistically analyzed, and the association of the existent concept and the composition concept was visualized separately over the association concept networks. The results show the visualized associative concept networks give the central concepts for designing.

    Recently, the function of the illumination has been changed from the emphasis on the brightness to evoke impressions. However, the distinction of the impressions of design has not yet been developed. The purpose of this research is to gain understanding the structure of associations focusing on impression process. The method of this research is analysis of the impression process. From the result, we found the differences of reasons from the same impression. This indicates the structure of associations affects the impressions. This research will contribute to build a design methodology based on the image-database which comprises relations between images and linguistics concept.

    About the appearance design of the cake store, we made two design concepts from the viewpoint of "easy to enter after desiring to enter". We performed one trial about the method to make them. Specifically, we extracted 12 impressions and 48 cognitive parts which constitute cognitive evaluation structure by the evaluation grid method. The questionnaire of five steps of SD measures about 12 impressions was conducted using 25 kinds of sample photographs in October, 2007. From a result, two cognitive evaluation structures were clarified by the interval regression analysis and rough sets. We made two design concepts from this cognitive evaluation structure of this present condition. We asked for design specifications based on each concept by the view of "annexation" related to the creativity which Prof. Norihiko Mori advocated. Creating each 3-dimensional sketch from the obtained design specifications, we verified the concept. As a result, it became clear that the sketch is reflecting the design concept. That is, the design concept deciding method of the proposal was verified.

    The viewer sees exhibition through the explanation. But the viewer understands a work by work thoughts and the explanation would be limited. Therefore if I try to make an audience understand a work correctly, it's necessary also to communicate explanation to a work and designer's plan besides the information to the form of the work. When an audience sees a work, and felt one can be shared with a designer and other audience, the effect of exhibition would rise further. A workshop program for communication of an audience and a designer is watched recently. An audience can see actively through a workshop program, and a designer can hear audience's opinion to a work. When appreciating a work of author principle designer, it's important to understand designer's idea in particular. Therefore free communication of a designer and an audience through a workshop is needed. Author principle designer and a connector cooperated, planned a workshop program, did exhibition by 100% design Tokyo of Tokyo designers' week 2007 and carried out a workshop to color as this research task. And a result of the workshop is reflected by the design through conference of a connector with a designer.

    It is necessary for information exchange/transmission in a company to be a good flow so that a company succeeds. This proves right whether ability for communication is enough. Many people from company and members of society are interested in sociology,business administration,economics,but a design does not have interest. When it is merely idea,and a design produces form of a thing ,I am apt to arrest you. A design is human action and thought and idea, and it is a key expressing culture and social conditions of the times. It corporate strategy, I reinforce the design which there was not of taking it into account so far and suggest a method to touch an originality /brand. Because it is communication and a study about a design, I perform the history by precedent documents and theoretical consideration. From the viewpoint of social problem and culture thought of the present age, I build a theory of an original communication design. A company visit interviews ti now what kind of expectation a company has toward a design and power of communication.

    Not the quality of the design but the charm element of the aspect in the selection searches for this consideration. Design..attribute..cut..see..concrete..desire..catch..realities..clarify..aim. We are requesting to be suitable for my sensibility and body sensation right. A decision making is very complex. Some information changes the importance degree, it relates, and the entire value is decided. Even if the same ..at all.. is seen, the place felt a charm is different ..each person... It can be thought a sense selection, too and a certainly reasonable basis of value is sure to exist there. How to catch the design is controlled by the attribute on person's side. For instance, sex is a typical attribute. As this investigation aspect, sex is first taken and enumerated. However, there might be the realities that cannot be caught only by sex. The cut of sex of the brain is added to a new clue, and it searches for the realities of the design selection.

    In the mathematical knot theory, knot can be defined as an embedding of a circle in the three dimensional Euclidean space, link can be defined as a group of knots. In the plastic sense, as 3-dimensional objects, knots and links represent a very interesting phenomenon. This paper focuses on shapes of links formed with toruses, using computer graphics, and attempts to present variations of the form of link patterns which are interesting in visual and plastic sense. The basis for the study of these designs is the mathematical knot theory.

    Animal and plant design patterns in ancient wooden buildings are reproduced using various logarithmic spirals found within the patterns with CAD. In Japanese traditional architecture the logarithmic spirals expressed the intention of the creators by deconstructing and reconstructing the beauty of these natural patterns. Due to the logarithmic spiral's antipodal characteristics, both straight lines and curved lines were used. It is confirmed that the logarithmic spirals can create the various basic patterns by repeating similar figures and thereby, evoke the viewers' consciousness.

    Many of product designers conceive the idea of a design, and they utilize the sketch by the perspective method which expresses a solid on a plane as a means of the communication to project members in many cases. In order to express a form freely by sketch, a certain amount of training is needed and much time is used in design education. Firstly, this paper describes the training of acquisition of the way-of-thinking method of a design using a sketch to the college student who has not received design education till then. Next, the paper describes the possibility of the new design by the outsider who has not received special design education.

    The characteristic of vehicle from visual trope for metaphorical topic is the key point of user to understand metaphorical message. This research takes vehicle and topic to discuss their similar category, form of expression, difference, connection and other relations. First, we use "classification investigation" to classify the samples from the above-mentioned. Then we do "communication effects investigation" aims at six assessment items, which are comprehensibility, likeness, creativity, impression, fun and logicality. At last, taking two investigation results do cross-sectional analyses and clarify the effects of the relations from metaphorical vehicle and design topic in communication. The results shows:the communication effects are more effective when the relations between metaphorical vehicle and topic are "complex similar" and "higher difference, higher connection."

    With the development of ubiquitous, foreign tourists can get a lot of tourism information immediately. In addition, as the different culture, there are many problems that about cognitive of tourism information. Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider the guide information of sightseeing spots from global viewpoint. The aim of this paper is elucidate behavior and needs that tourist wayfinding through scenario. From the user stories that sights and experienced of a Taiwanese tourists to classified and aggregated requirements and problems about the tourism activity. Furthermore, we have developed conceptual scenarios by the method of 5W1H. It to do a research that extracted the needs and problem when toured the west area of Hakodate.
