Two hundred and fifty-eight references on “Bioethics” referred from MEDLINE were analyzed.
These references were published from January 1972 to September 1987. The following results were obtained.
1) The number of journals on “Bioethics” increased from 1977 to 1979, decreased from 1979 to 1981, and since then has been increasing gradually.
2) There were 108 serial journals and “Hastings Center Report” was the most frequently cited (33 references or 12.8%). There was no core journal concerning “Bioethics.”
3) The 108 journals were classified under 27 subjects by Ulrich's classification, of which the most frequent was “Medical Sciences” (35 journals, 32.4%·87 titles, 33.7%).
4) The 108 serial journals were published in 15 countries under 258 titles, of which 64 journals (59.3%) and 158 titles (61.2%) were from the U. S. A.
5) Of the major descriptors, 218 were selected, and the most frequent descriptor was “Bioethics”, which was given to 183 of 258 titles (70.9%).
6) Of the subcategories, 45 were selected, and the most frequent subcategory was “Humanities”, which was given to 23 of 288 citations.
