The project"Study on Analyzing Methods of Human Body Functions Using Various Simultaneous Measurements(VSM)"was started in the Bio-Emission Lab., Div.Of Radiation Research, National Institute of Radiological Sciences(NIRS), Science and Technology Agency(STA)of the Japanese Government. VSM systems were used to measure the physiological state emitting qi during qigong. Results from separately analyzing each measurement item of RSP(ReSPiration), PPG(PhotoPlethysmoGram), GSR(Galvanic Skin Response), EEG(ElectroEnecephaloGram), showed periods of RSP and PPG lengthened, the GSR value increased and a peak appeared, and when alpha wave amplitude increased when emitting qi during qigong as compared to at rest. Moreover, each item was analyzed together, even at the time of emitting qi during qiogong, a certain change occurred in the subject. The periods of RSP and PPG became short. GSR decreased. The alpha wave amplitude decreased. This was the result of the whole human body having a synchronization. The difference between emitting qi during qigong and at rest, and moreover the change while emitting qi during qigong, were measured.

The purpose of this study is to measure the endocrine responses caused by "wujijinggong"training which is one kind of health-qigong. Blood samples were taken three times, right before and after the qigong training and 30min later. In the trained group the concentrations of noradrenaline, serotonin and β-endorphin increased significantly. On the other hand in the untrained group the measured hormone concentrations did not show any significant change. These results suggested that wujijinggong might have an effect on both physical conditions and mentality in the trained.

It is becoming apparent that concentration improves the human body. One concentration method is zen, and a study was conducted on its technique of zazen. The changes in the respective levels of CD4, CD8, CD4/CD8 and natural killer(NK)cell activity in venous blood were measured. Measuring sessions were conducted 40 minutes before and after zazen was practiced. The CD4 level increased but the CD8 level did not show significant changes. It has been suggested that the helper T-cells increase and stimulate the immune capability. The NK cell activity did not show significant changes and it had a tendency to decrease. Further experiments are being planned to take into consideration the experience of each practioner and the specific time zazen is practiced.

According to Cho Shiyo, an authority on Chinese Genkyoku, and Shigemi Sasaki, professor at Tokai University, there is "Kiba"in Hase Village, Nagano Prefecture. A total of 11 atopic dermatitis patients living in Tokyo and a nearby suburban area were brought to Hase Village. After staying there for 7 days, the patients were examined on their disease conditions. In addition, their AP values were measured through AMI and questionnaire surveys were conducted to learn their anxiety levels. The results were as follows:Of the 11 patients, 9 became less itchy than before. The patients'AP values measured by AMI were lower on their last day in Hase than in Tokyo, which means their parasympathetic nerves came to function more. The patients became less anxious and more relaxed than before. Based on judgment criteria for atopic dermatitis, 9 out of 11 patients were determined to have been favorably affcted by the stay in Hase and 1 slightly favorably. The remaining 1 patient was a mild case and thus showed no significant changes.

EQR irradiation has several effects on the human body, including increased surface temperature. Because the human body is more than 60% water, changes in water structures were investigated before and after the EQR irradiation. NMR was used to investigate the water structure. The EQR irradiation led to a decreased number of water clusters which became a so called"healty water".

A single square voltage pulse (SSVP) method was used to measure the effects of 5 different categories of vocal music on electrical conductivity at the extremities of the body. The parameter BP which indicates electroconductivity showed the largest increase after listening to Xoomii music. As for the meridian system, the lung meridian showed the strongest increase for all music types. This seems to indicate that music effects made a dominant contribution which appeared to be related mainly to the respiratory function.

The curative effects of qigong therapy on Parkinson's disease(PD)patients were observed in 52 patients against a control group of 31 patients. The results showed that after an average of 12.4 months of qigong exercises, Webster's marks of the qigong group decreased significantly(P<.001).Of 52 patients 73% decreased more than 15% which was considered to be the effective rate; 31% decreased more than 25%, which was also marked effective. In qigong therapy, the curative effects are added gradually over 6 months. Correlation dimension(CD)of EEG and P300 were made use of to investigate the brain function mechanism of qigong therapy. We found relatively lower CD values of the 8-channel EEG in PD patients than normal people, which represented a lower active capability level of the whole brain function and a depressed brain condition. Meanwhile P3 latency was prolongated significantly, indicating affected cognitive functions of PD subjects. After 3 months of qigong exercises, all the above indexes showed improvememts. We suggest that the regulation of the brain function by qigong plays an important role in its curative effects on PD patients.

In our previous study, we proposed a method to quantitatively analyze intellectual resonance based on a concrete message. This method allows us to analyze how and to what extent intellectual resonance occurs in a group through the use of digital information such as numbers and characters. In this method, participants take their seats and fill out special cards according to instructions. The degree of coincidence among neighboring participants is then examined and scores are assigned to the results. The scores are evaluated by mathematical tools within a framework of probability theory. In this study, we analyzed the data of 530 participants(12 groups)who carried out three trials on the same day for the first time, one trial"), with an aim for resonance("positive trial"), one with an aim for no resonance ("negative trial"), and the other without any aim toward resonance("neutral trial"). In three trials, the degree of resonance of the digital information fell into the theoretically expected degree range range. The degree of resonance in the positive trials was higher than that in the neutral trials. The degree of resonance in the negative trials was not significantly different from that in the neutral trials. These results support the evaluation in our previous study that participants changed the heterogeneity of the probability distribution of information selection mainly in the range of respective groups, thereby increasing the degree of coincidence.

The authors have been demonstrating the existence of non-visual color recognition. In this non-visual recognition experiment, the male subject was only informed that the target samples were colored cards and not actually shown them. He identified colors by using hand sensation. In order to avoid a learning-effect, the subject was not informed of test results each time. Under this condition, two tests were carried out. One was color identification among five colors("red, ""yellow, ""green, ""blue"and "purple")by using 121 colored cards. Each of them differed in brightness values, saturation chromas and hues. The other was identification among four colors("red, ""yellow, ""green, " and "purple")by using 113 different colored cards. These tests produced significant results to suggest that non-visual color recognition was possible without the subject judging from test result feedback.

During more than ten years, we have trained over 40 young people, both male and female, with ESP(extrasensory perception)and PK(psychokinesis)abilities through inducement. The training has enabled them to turn from knowing nothing about ESP/PK to being able to recognize characters by clairvoyance and remove objects with mind power. On this basis, we have conducted a series of experiments on thought transmitting, supernormal-use of calculators, etc. The results are helpful for us to analyze and study human brain function in addition to its already well-known learning and memorizing abilities.

Studies report that some qigong masters or students can generate nT-order to 100nT-order magnetic field under their control. The authors developed a pilot system to measure the magnetic field caused by human hands. The pilot measureing system consists of a small magnetic shielding case(double box type)which shields human hands, magnetometers, amplifiers, a data sampling system and a monitoring system. Geomagnetic field was decreased about 1/1500 in the shielding case. Moreover, for the easy carrying, the magnetic shielding case could be disassembled into some parts and placed in handling packet. Results of the preliminary test confirmed, for example, that it is easy to detect nT-order magnetic field not caused by human hands. Next it is necessary to improve the way heat and moisture are removed.

Changes in EEG with progression of Qigong training were studied for six trainees at three, eight and twelve months after the first lesson. The measurements were performed on three different methods of quiet Qigong. Although the effective amplitude of the occipital alpha waves did not change so much, the ratio of the frontal to the occipital alpha waves tended to increase with months passed and at the 12th month, it became larger during Qigong than in resting. The lag time of alpha waves between the frontal and the occipital region was shorter at the 3rd month. The case that the value becomes short is while concentrating on some task. The frequency of alpha waves became slower at the 12th month. These results were considered to show that the subjects concentrated at the beginning because of a tension caused by the test and learning the Qigong procedure and then they gradually became able to practice easily.

Digital plethysmograms of healthy subjects were measured and chaos analyzed. Correlation dimentions calculated with Judd's method were smaller than two in general. They were highest(near2.0)in low aged children and decreased as the subject age increased. Increases of dimensions by the conduction of Nihon Ijyutu were also observed. Measurement of the effect of suggestion or resting etc.are now in progress.

Three-dimensional positron emission tomography(3D-PET)using ^18F-fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG)can be a powerful tool to map both cerebral and muscular metabolism during running. The aim of this study is to clarify the brain regions which are activated during field running. Whole body PET images of runners were analyzed by defining regions of interest(ROI)on these PET images. The total radioactivity distribution(TRD)was calculated for the bilateral foot-base muscles, the legs and the thighs. Brain images were analyzed using a software package, Statistical Parametrical Mapping(SPM96)to clarify the areas of positive correlation with the amount of muscle activity. Statistical analysis revealed marked activation in the higher cortical structure such as the parieto-temporo-occipital association cortex, the frontal eye field, and limbic structure such as the parahippocampal gyrus, amygdala, orbitofrontal and medial frontal cortex, etc. Emotional and immunological changes due to exercise might be explained by these changes in the limbic system.

Quantum Brain Dynamics is a physical theory in which macroscopic ordered phenomena in biological systems such as fundamental processes of the brain are described by quantum field theory. Existence of macroscopic condensates of evanescent photons is shown by taking into account the interaction between the electric dipole field of water inside and outside of cells and the electromagnetic field. Those evanescent photon condensates are considered to control the brain functioning by interacting with the classical neuronal system of neural networks.

In recent years, much research related to Life Information Science in Korea has been carried out. Many qualitative and individual experiences have been obtained in terms of Tan, Qi-gong, etc. for hundreds of years. But there was no quantitative analysis of those super-psi phenomena and the human body, and there were no attempts to investigate them scientifically until the 1980's. Since SERA was established in 1989, several studies have been reported. In addition, the foundation of KJSS has promoted research in this field. This paper introduces the current state of research related to Life Information Science in Korea.
