Qigong therapy is a traditional Chinese health treatment. The Flowing Finger Pose is one treatment exercise developed from Buddha's Shou Yin and Dao's Zhi Jue. This exercise is body action, especially finger action, coupled with mind attention. We show several results of recovery from nearly incurable diseases (atopic dermatitis, glaucoma, diabetes, etc.) and discuss qigong therapy.

The breathing methods in Qigong, yoga, zazen and the like are effective in coordinating autonomic nervous function, and their effectiveness for constant maintenance of the human body has been given by previous studies. These have played a role with the important abdominal respiration. In this study, we compared effects of the respiration used while playing a wind instrument which was conscious abdominal respiration and the respiration used in internal Qigong. We also examined various influences on the autonomic nervous function and the physiology function. We evaluated autonomic nervous function by ECG measurements and we tried evaluations with an index of time area analysis ( CV_<R-R>) and frequency area analysis ( LF/HF ). From the results, we reached some conclusions about breathing methods as health methods.

This experiment focused on the Qi in Qigong, psi power, and calligraphy. Three subjects cooperated in the experiment ; a student attending a Qigong class, a calligrapher who practices Qigong-calligraphy, and a Qigong master with psi power. A comparative study was made of their analyzed physiology data. There were similar change s in Qigong, psi power, and calligraphy, for each respiratory pattern, and in the physiology data. Thus, the Qi emitted in Qigong, by psi power, a nd during calligraphy were thought to be the same, even though the method utilized was different for each.

Mental and psychological effects brought by collage work were studied with psychological tests (POMS et al), and physiological measurements. Subjects were healthy young people, ten males and twelve females. Their EEGs and respirations were measured while making a collage at their discretion. Before and after collage makings, psychological tests and measurements of blood pressure and pulse were carried out. Amplitudes of α waves on the occipital area became large in the resting state after the work. For the male subjects the α amplitudes showed a tendency to become large also in the resting state during the work. Frequency of the α waves became fast while remembering their own childhood, but it hardly changed while imagining one's own collage work. Ratios of the α amplitudes on the right /left occipital area (O_2/O_1) were large for males, especially during mental calculation and childhood imagery ; that is, some verbal thinking in the brain was considered. The ratios of subjects whose POMS parameters showed only a little improvement were also large. This suggested that there was some relation between the psychological effects of the collage work and the manners of thinking in the brain.

The relaxing effect of fragrance has been known since days long past, but this effect is said to diminish as people become used to it. Wearing a tie is generally considered to induce stress, but its impact is again said to weaken as people become accustomed to it. The author has conducted an experimental study for 82 days on these relationships and reports the results in this paper.

α-waves play an important role in enhancing business performance. Also, well-devised time management methods are expected to help produce significant results. One of these methods is making concrete time allocation plans, by specifying time frames for each job. Another method is leaving jobs as they are if they are not completed within the allocated time, moving on to the next task in the schedule. This paper examines effectiveness of these two methods in enhancing business performance.

As an active and effective self-health method, I propose the Integrated Body Control Method (IBC Method) which is composed of Image, Breath control, Intention, Consciousness, Cognition, Qi and Healing. The method focuses on self positive image, intention and consciousness to get better blood flow, nutrition, immunity function and Qi to the whole body and especially to diseased parts. The method changes the body positively while recognizing actual body change. It repeats the instant change between tensioned-active caution concentration and relaxed passive caution concentration. It adjusts the balance between sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves and immediately and drastically changes blood pressure, heart rate, blood flow, body temperature and perspiration. It can improve body functions-spontaneous recovery, immunity, metabolism and regeneration of organs, cells, skins and nerves, for example. The IBC Method is available to cure diseases and heal injuries (autonomic ataxia, stiff shoulders, pain, nerve damage and so on) to make its users healthy.

Negative air ions are known to activate cell functions, stabilize the emotional state, and induce recovery from fatigue by preventing acidification of blood and accelerating metabolism. Generators of these negative air ions have recently been incorporated in household appliances such as air-conditioners. However, evaluation of their effects has not been sufficient ; there are only a few related reports. In this study, we measured electrodermal activities and the skin blood flow as indices of effects of negative air ions on the autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular system, respectively, by allowing the subject to inhale negative air ions at 7,000 particles/cm^3 or 20,000 particles/cm^3. Although no significant changes were noted in electrodermal activities, our results suggested that negative air ions have effects on physiologic activities including autonomic activities.

For research on aromatherapy, an apparatus to measure type of smell and strength should be developed. Basic research for the detection of odorous molecules requires examination of the effect of water molecules in air. Especially, the authors examined the change of electrical characteristics (impedance Z and resonant frequency f) of an AT-cut quartz resonator on which a sensitive membrane of Japanese lacquer or squalene had been placed. Changing ratios of 〓Z/Z for ethanol and water molecules were positive for the Japanese lacquer membrane, but it was negative for the squalene membrane. However, changing ratios of 〓f/f were positive for both membranes. The sensitivity for water molecules by the squalene membrane for 〓f/f was about 100 times bigger than that by the Japanese lacquer, and the former was about 8 times bigger for 〓Z/Z. These results indicated that in order to decrease the effect of water molecules in smell detection, the Japanese lacquer membrane was better than the squalene membrane.

This study focused on changes in regional brain activity when smelling lavender aroma. The autonomic nerve tones were evaluated by calculating heart rate variabilities using ECG data. Increases of parasympathetic tone were suggested after smelling lavender aroma as seen in increases in HF and decreases in LF/HF. FDG-PET measurements revealed metabolic reductions in the right superior temporal gyrus and right postcentral gyrus and activations in the left posterior part of the cingulate gyrus. These results implied that smelling lavender aroma induced not only relaxation but also increased arousal level in these subjects.

In recent years, the Japanese health insurance system has been approaching its limit and there have been many changes in society structures and disease structures so that, the big bang has already started in dental medical care and some dynamic changes have been occurring. What has been asked for a shift from cure to prevention and furthermore to dentistry for happiness ; dental medical care offering "amenities" ; attachment of importance on the relationship with the whole body ; and treatment in view of the patient's whole body based on natural views via Oriental thoughts. For these purposes, it is essential that integrative medicine be practiced, and application of CAM has been the key means of achieving it. In order to realize integrative medicine, information regarding CAM should be between medical personnel and patients and patients' knowledge of medical care should be raised. In addition, Other important points include economic evaluation through analysis of the cost-effectiveness of CAM in practical medical care fields ; making an appropriate health insurance system ; realization of mixed treatments (of insured and uninsured treatments) ; and introduction of private sector vitality. Consciousness-raising that the medical care system is inherently for the patients' sakes is called for. The time has come to hold realistic discussions taking the above matters into account.

Holistic medicine approaches the whole human, an entity harmoniously composed of a body, mind and spirit. The mind and spirit are both states of energy. We hypothesize that the mind is the expression of the spirit and the spirit, itself, is defined as the potential energy of one's field. Accordingly, holistic medicine can be considered to be a "medicine of fields," or "energy medicine." The fundamental idea behind energy medicine is not pathogenesis on which Western medicine is based, but salutogenesis, a theory proposed by Aaron Antonovsky. According to salutogenesis, an illness is not static physical damage but a story generated from the dynamics of one's life. Medical practitioners and patients should explore the way of acquiring better health from the story. Energy medicine has not been scientifically proven yet, and it will take a long time to do so. Medicine is the activities of the field woven by a patient, his or her family, friends and medical professionals. When all those involved become powerful, vulnerable and aware of "memento-mori," and aim at "shukyaku-bunri,"they will reach ideal holistic medicine. People's awareness and interest have been rising worldwide in complementary/alternative medicine (CAM), and a trend is now moving toward integrated medicine. We believe that this trend will pave the way for the next era of holistic medicine.

When many people gather and do something intensively, no matter how little they are conscious of the results of their conduct, an anomalous output from a random number generator that is set around such people occurs. It is thus recognized as a statistically significant occurrence. When a worldwide event occurs and many people notice it, random number generators set around worldwide show an anomalous output. It has been a recent tendency to receive such reports. This report is a continuation of our previous report from the last month of 2001 to the beginning of 2002. It is considered here that an accumulated deviation of anomalous output occurred from December 27th, 2002, to January 7th, 2003. The results and experimental data were statistically significant : Z=2.63, p=0.009 (both tails) during the New Year's holiday, while controls of 10 sectioned period area occurred by chance. We could not recognized a significant variation of the Z value within the experiment period. At the event of New Year's holiday data, a cumulative deviation was recognized as being a statistically significant occurrence when the conciousness of the majority people would be concentrated. This is the same conclusion of the last report. It is suggested that a data deviation of the output from random number generator occurs during a New Year's holiday.

The purpose of the present work was to investigate a mechanism of consciousness from the viewpoint of holographic cosmology which offers a candidate interpretation of the quantum gravity theory explaining all physical phenomena. According to the holographic principle, the universe is coded in a hologram, and a final theory is believed to be concerned not with fields and spacetime, but rather with information. Human consciousness is considered to consist of information and to have energy. Shannon entropy for information theory is changeable to energy when all degrees of freedom are considered, and the energy is also changeable to matter. The present work proposed a model in which consciousness as a type of information is transformed to life energy, and part of that life energy is materialized as an atom-forming body. Since the spacetime of the universe has four dimensions, all information is recorded on a three-dimensional boundary. All the coded information of I_<HB> ≤ 1.2R^2 × 10^<66> bits is believed to correspond to consciousness.

Although there have been reports on changes in breathing and brain blood volume during Qigong, the relationship between them was not clear. In this study, the relationship between the total hemoglobin concentration of the cerebral cortex and breathing of six Qigong trainers during Qigong was analyzed. As a result, there was no correlation between the brain blood volume and the amount of breath per minute. It is suggested that the brain blood volume of Qigong trainers changed by consciousness activities of the Qi-emission task, and not by breathing.

One of the characteristic healing techniques of Traditional Indian Medicine (Ayurveda), Shirodhara (oil dripping treatment on the forehead), was studied by a new modern approach with a healing robot, which provided the standardized reproducible method for Shirodhara. 16 healthy subjects (1^<st> experiment) and 57 healthy subjects (2^<nd> experiment) had Shirodhara with the monitoring of the physiological examinations in the 1^<st> experiment, and the psychometric questionnaires (STAI and altered state of consciousness : ASC) in the 2^<nd> experiment. During Shirodhara, heart rate and CO_2 excretion decreased, and an alternative marker of sympathetic tone, LF/HF ratio calculated from ECG R-R variability, was suppressed. In the EEG study ,, wave was predominant in the frontal lobe, and frontal midbrain ,, wave appeared during Shirodhara. These physiological changes were supported by the anxiolytic effects of the 2^<nd> experiment associated with altered state of consciousness in the Shirodhara conducted by the healing robot. Both anxiolytic effects and depth of altered state of consciousness are correlated with the skin temperature of the foot during Shirodhara, which indicated the linkage of the physiological and psychological dynamics during Shirodhara. According to the Ayurvedic concept of life, Shirodhara may at first alter the state of consciousness of the inner side of the mind, resulting in the decrease of anxiety of mind level, which was manifested as the suppression of sympathetic nervous activity and the elevation of the foot skin temperature in the body level. The level of consciousness is said to be the life information filed. This mechanism of manifestation of the information field through mind and body level is so similar to biotechnology of the modern medicine, that we call it "Spiritual Biotechnology".

My colleagues and I have developed methods to assess the effects of odor on physiological function at the level of changes in brain function. We have found that electroencephalography (EEG) analysis provides us with a detailed picture of these changes. In this article we introduce findings from assessing the effects of coffee aroma. Coffee can have a relaxing effect while also restoring alertness, and it is widely understood that this effect comes from its aroma. We selected 6 types of typical coffee beans and used electroencephalographic analysis to study differences in effects according to bean type. In order to assess relaxation effects, we analyzed alpha waves. Significantly higher values for alpha waves were associated with exposure to Guatemala than to Mandheling or Hawaii Kona. These values also tended to be higher for Guatemala than for the control substance or for Mocha Mattari. Alpha waves tended to decrease with exposure to Mandheling in comparison to the control substance. We used P300 event related potential as a physiological indicator of cognitive function. P300 latency was significantly shorter for Brazil Santos than for no odor, Guatemala, or Mocha Mattari, and tended to be shorter than for Blue Mountain. These results suggest that, because the effects of coffee aroma can vary depending on the type of coffee beans used, it could be quite useful to categorize coffee beans according to desired objective. Recent rapid developments in brain imaging, including EEG, now make it possible to explore previously unknown relationships between odor and the human brain. These developments are opening the door to rapid advances in research in this field.
