We have carried out the characterisation of pyrolytic oil derived from Loy Yang coal. The distillation of pyrolytic oil provided five fractions, which were denoted by Trap, Frl, Fr2, Fr3, and Bottom. We conducted an ultimate analysis, a gas chromatograph assay, a gas chromatograph mass spectrometry, a gas chromatography distillation, an infrared spectroscopic analysis, and a nuclear magnetic resonance analysis for the fractions. Fr2, Fr3 and Bottom was analysed by an average molecular structural characterisation because components in Fr2, Fr3, and Bottom are heavy enough not to identify by a gas chromatography assay. We found that Fr2, Fr3, and Bottom contained phenols as a major ingredient. Our analyses of pyrolytic oil indicated the possibility of an increase in the production of oxygenated aromatic compounds.
