Volatile-char interaction (VCI) during coal pyrolysis is attractive for decreasing of tar. In the present study, we developed a novel circulating fluidized bed reactor (CFB) that consisted of bubbling bed type pylolyzer and combuster. Raw coal was fed at about 0.4 g/min to the pyrolyzer, and the gases, tar, and char are formed by pyrolysis. Resultant char was circulated to the combuster with bed material, and then combusted completely or partially. During the partial combustion, char was recycled to the pyrolyzer to enhance VCI. The heavy and light tar yields were decreased with char recycling, and the composition of heavy tar remained after the VCI was slightly changed.
