The previous studies on learning strategies of Japanese as a second language are focusing more on Chinese characters, vocabularies, listening comprehension and selection strategies for case particles but less on the learning strategies for postpositional particles. This paper aims to clarify the reasons for the misuse of "ni" and "de" particles in the learning process, and describes the positive effect of active learning motivation strategies on the learning of postpositional particles.

This article reports the study conducted on the Japanese simplification system called Yasashikunaare. The aim of the study was to gain learners' perspectives on the practicality of the Japanese simplification system. The subject of this study was a group of intermediate Japanese learners. The experiment was carried out and the post experiment interviews were conducted. The results indicated that the majority of participants found the system beneficial. However, the study also found that the approach to reading methods varies among the participants and so were their needs.

This study analyzes collocations in mōshiokuri nurse reports. It aims to be a foundational study for teaching Japanese to foreign nurses, responding to the increased interest in medical Japanese in Japanese Language Education. Nurse reports use particular collocations of medical terms that are not found in the national nursing exams, but which are frequently used in professional environments. For example, when nurses report on administration of oxygen, they may use the phrase " ××ℓ itteimasu (= go)", while a fever report may often contain the phrase "××℃ totteimasu (= take)".

We developed audio-visual materials for intermediate learners of Japanese based on the textbook used in our Japanese language course. The materials were created using OJAD (Online Japanese Accent Dictionary), which drew visual representations of the pitch patterns of the input text and generated synthesized speech. In addition, we asked two Thai learners of Japanese to evaluate the materials along with their audio and visual functions after their trial use. The learners preferred to use both functions of the materials in combination and reported on the effectiveness of the visualization of the text's pitch patterns.

International students are beneficial human resources for local government that is under the influence of internationalization. It is meaningful for both local residents and international students to solve common projects together in the shared language, Japanese. That's because the process of solving the projects in Japanese language provides a win-win situation for both. In this research, we look into an impact on the local residents who participated the projects and discuss changes and influences triggered by the project. We provide the possibility of language educational approach to local government projects based on the concept of "the citizen through language" (Hosokawa 2012).

This paper describes the incorporation of the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach in an advanced Japanese language course for international students at a Japanese university. To improve students' Japanese language skills while learning about Edo-era history and scientific technology, we chose the regional historical heritage site Tatsumi Canal as a topic for five 90-minute lessons. Lesson observations and student feedback suggest students engaged with and deepened their understanding of the topic while utilizing Japanese language skills. We also noted the significance of collaboration between topic research specialists and language teachers during curriculum and material development for CLIL lessons.

As a part of the project that improves training system for Multicultural Teachers, the survey was conducted to analyze how the participating teachers' beliefs change before and after the training. The results show that there seems to be little change in their beliefs after a short and lecture-centered training. To further explore how the teachers' beliefs are formed, interviews were conducted to in-service teachers. The results revealed that some beliefs are affected by the teachers' real experience; while others such as relationship between BICS and CALP are affected by the teachers' knowledge.

In students' problem-solving type of discussions, problematic solutions are often generated, which are included in the groups' final proposals. However, they lack concreteness, and/or do not meet the conditions of the problem situations. To prevent these problems, a self-checking stage is incorporated into the process of the discussion. In this study, the students' discourse of the self-checking stage is scrutinized along with their final products, to verify the effect of the self-checking stage.

Following face-to-face JSL lessons in which particles were presented with the images that L1 users would associate with each of them, we developed online materials to further help learners internalize what they learned. A post-test revealed that beginning students' scores improved regardless of the use of the online materials. On the other hand, intermediate and advanced students' scores did not improve after using the online materials, although those who attended the face-to-face sessions scored higher than those who did not. The result of a student survey suggested that the online materials would be improved with sound, more explanations and exercises.

"The care" of the skill training system for foreigner's frame was enforced in Nov. 2017. Onomatopoeia is used many in the care. Therefore, I investigated that focused on onomatopoeia of the care in Mongolia for the new "care" frame was expected. As a result, even if it was a Mongolian Japanese learner, about the onomatopoeia which expressed the symptom of the body, rolling and shallow understanding were seen. Importance to teach onomatopoeia of the care to express the symptom of the body in particular was asked here about.

A survey of visually-impaired, Braille-using learners of Japanese language was conducted using questions of Information retrieval, a JLPT reading test item. Information retrieval tests retrieval of necessary information from advertisements, brochures, business documents, etc. Since it requires reading strategies other than perusal, it is considered inappropriate for Braille, which is character-by-character reading with fingers. So, currently it is not on the test with JLPT Braille booklets. However, the survey indicates that Braille users utilize scanning and other reading strategies. Answers to the questions and subsequent interviews indicate Braille users' little opportunities for training such strategies and their insufficient accuracies.

Three teachers who previously worked in the same place co-authored a paper after one of them moved to another workplace. They co-reviewed their collaboration to identify factors contributing to its success. This was done by reviewing their three-month collaboration individually using a teaching portfolio chart, then preparing a statement together and analyzing the text data through SCAT. The following concepts emerged: they aimed to "produce a deliverable" to the work; they endeavored to "communicate and share," "cooperate" and "self-disclose" during the process; "learning" brought a "sense of achievement" and motivated them to "develop the collaboration" further; and co-reviewing has confirmed the "value of review".

This presentation reviews the 2017 YNU Japanese Language and Culture Summer Program and discusses considerations for improvements. The program mainly consisted of Japanese language and culture classes, and the 2017 program offered beginning-intermediate and advanced classes to match the online placement test results. Academic counseling was also provided for those interested in applying for graduate school. The program evaluation showed that while the participants were satisfied with the Japanese language and culture classes overall, some felt that the program did not exactly match their individual Japanese language levels and purposes for attending the summer program.

In a dictogloss task, a short text is read to learners who note words in writing as they listen. Subsequently, learners combine their resources so as to reconstruct their version of the original text in small groups. Through this task learners are able to utilize all four language skills. A number of studies have shown that in a dictogloss task, a learner's listening ability as well as grammar and writing ability is enhanced. This task was originally derived from English language education. Recently, various classroom studies on dictogloss tasks have been reported in the field of Japanese language education. However, more classroom studies need to be conducted in order to use dictogloss effectively. In this study, the possibility of how dictogloss can be employed to benefit intermediate level learners to learn Japanese written grammar and expressions is explored.

Many researches claim that self-evaluation data by Cds items is considered as a scale with high validity. However, it is also reported that many learners quite often evaluate their acquisition levels lower than before. This paper aims to show that this "Lowering" observed in self-evaluation data by Cds items is considered to co-occur with learners' progress in understanding their acquisition levels and therefore it can possibly be used as a tool to estimate learners' language proficiency level.

The author designed the oral presentation class for intermediate learners. The learners create rubrics through the discussion of well executed (performance and evaluation viewpoints). As a result, creating self-made rubrics enabled the learners to find requirement for their presentation. This attempt refers possibilities makes them to have responsibilities and higher motivations for their performance in the presentation.

This study is intended as an investigation about what information Japanese language learners need in order to understand Kyogen. In Japanese traditional performing arts, Noh and Kabuki are well known by Japanese language learners. However, awareness of Kyogen is low among them. Therefore, as part of a student project, we attempt to create a booklet that introduces Kyogen using "Easy Japanese" to Japanese language learners. We interview 3 Japanese language learners who come from non-Chinese character areas about their impressions of the booklet. The result of the interview was that Japanese language learners also wanted to know lines of Kyogen.

I conducted the "Let Us Learn about My Country and Its Culture" Project through my lessons on "Project Work" given to foreign exchange students. To attain the goals of this project, I gave three presentations to Japanese and international students who had not taken "Project Work" during one semester at Aichi Prefectural University. The theme of the first presentation was "Recommended spots in my country," the second was "My country's pop culture," and the third was "Old tales from my country." I report on the achievements of this project and future challenges based on "Reflection sheets" filled in by the foreign exchange students after the presentations and on "Comments" by people who attended the presentations.

I experimented by designing word-usage exercises in order to teach appropriate word-usage to a lower-intermediate level class. At instruction, I gave out exercise questions on how to use particles and the expression, "kinisuru(to mind)," in short sentences as an attempt to improve the class's differentiation between synonymous expressions and comprehension toward the word forms. The students' sentences written before the instruction showed confusion with synonymous expressions as well as misuses of particles. After instruction, while errors decreased overall, some mistakes in the use of the particles I had gone through remained, defining the difficulty of instruction and its necessary improvements.

In universities and colleges majoring in social welfare, many international students are trained as advanced human resources. However, in social welfare-related workplaces, there is a large demand for labor containing work that is not necessarily advanced, both linguistically and technically. In this paper we will, first, report on the current state of Japanese practices for teaching work skills to foreign students of social welfare schools desiring to work in a social welfare facility. Next, by analyzing the necessity of learning clarified in the guidance process, we would like to present a draft of this guidance and to discuss a systematic teaching method based on the work content.

In response to requests from semi-advanced learners interested in Japanese history and culture, I adopted the use of a movie, Godzilla (1954), that can introduce many of these historical and cultural elements. Our goal is to understand how Japan has been reestablished after the war into what it has become today. For this purpose, we conducted group activities for themes such as politics, economics, society, culture and life in Japan in the 1950s. In this paper, we will consider the effectiveness of raw teaching materials utilized as a starting point for activities, which constitute a part of intellectual and academic activities of learners.

Learners commonly derive vocabulary and grammar from teachers regardless of the teaching method, the learning environment, or the learner's abilities. In some cases, however, the teacher cannot understand a learner's utterance or does not respond to the learner's request. In such cases, the utterance is corrected by the learner, and the vocabulary or grammar is again derived from the teacher. In this paper, through an analysis of the interactions between learners and teachers, I report on the methods of self-correction used by learners.

This report uses longitudinal style life story interview analysis to capture the quality of learners' experiences. In order to make study abroad life meaningful for learners, achieving goals such as Japanese language acquisition, self-growth and self-fulfillment are important. For example, if all goes well, life abroad will be a rich experience that leads to a fulfilling future career. Whether learners get to "learn through various experiences" or not is a crucial issue. From the viewpoint of learner participation in communities, this paper examines various supporting mechanisms that improve the "quality of experience" of study abroad life in Japan.

Having developed an original e-learning web system that helps intermediate and advanced students to learn 1400 noun-verb collocations, we wished to identify those collocations which learners found consistently difficult to internalize. Participants were asked to choose a proper particle and a verb which matches a noun in a given sentence. We then analyzed the percentage of correct answers in order to identity those collocations which students struggled with. What becomes apparent is that they tend to make errors with particles, collocations which are difficult to conjecture vis-à-vis their meanings, or verbs which don't include their substantive original meaning. We intend to improve our web system by reflecting upon, and incorporating feedback from participants.

This study reports on practical writing activities at special support classes for learning Japanese during the initial stages of Japanese language support for a JSL child. The three writing activities were "write a recipe", "make a picture diary" and "write about my likes". Through the dialogue between the researcher and the child during these activities, the researcher provided scaffolding so that the child could reflect on the contents of their dialogue for the child's own writing. As a result, it was observed that the child worked on the writing activities diligently while enjoying talking with the researcher. In conclusion, this study shows the effectiveness of scaffolding during writing activities and its potential in the future development of Japanese writing education for children.

In studies related to strategies in the listening comprehension process, it has been reported so far that the use of meta-cognitive strategies, such as "self-monitoring" and "selective attention", are effective and important. Therefore, in Japanese language classes, the researcher has incorporated activities to carefully observe the learners' listening comprehension and note-taking processes in a self- referential way using digital pens. In this research, the author presents an overview of educational practices using digital pens, and examines the possibility of the acquisition of meta-cognitive strategies from learners' reflection sheets.

Presenting at academic conferences is one way of publishing research results. Academic conferences have different characteristics in terms of field, presentation style, existence of peer review, and timeline from applying to presenting. Each research project has several aspects, and the focus of the aspects that the researcher wants to emphasize influences the choice of right conference, as well as the type of feedback the researcher is expecting. The authors' research group has made presentations at several academic conferences regarding the development of learning websites in the caregiving filed, and this paper describes how the authors have chosen the conferences to present their research.

In our university, we are working on FD for effective and efficient education practice. We began SD in order to enhance the teaching ability of faculty members from this year. Previously, as a part of FD, we held the teacher's workshop on various topics on how to proceed with classes, in addition to a class observation. From the fall session of this year, we recorded the class presentation of the teacher so that the teacher could observe his/her own class objectively. In this report, we consider the teacher's training, classroom change by the recording and the awareness of the teacher in an objective way.

Candidates coming to Japan to work as nurses under Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) are motivated by social and economic incentives and have a clear goal of passing the National Nurse Examination (NNE). However, a majority of them are forced to return to their home countries as a result of their failure to pass the exam. This paper clarifies the areas of difficulty experienced by Filipino candidates as well as their approaches to the NNE through the Modified Grounded Theory Approach method (M-GTA).

We have developed a new communication system for team teaching using FileMaker Go. When co-teachers enter attendance, progress of classwork, quizzes, homework, etc. on an iPad and tap the 'send' button, an e-mail will be sent automatically to co-teachers. The program also includes grammatical item lists. Teachers only have to tap the items taught on the day, and the names of items will be written in the e-mails. This system can save communication time and now no grammatical items in the textbook are left unfinished.
