ID tags are tags that can be identified at a distance. Their possible use in various fields has made them the subject of considerable interest. An intelligent pile, for example, has been developed by using an ID tag that stores informations on its location and so on. However, the high prices and the limited wide spread distance of detection have been obstacles to the practical use of ID tags. To overcome these obstacles, the authors have developed a new ID tag, which magnetically encoded to resonate at definite frequencies. Our aim is to develop a new location-detection system to be used with piles and so on. We successfully detected the position of a tag with an accuracy of ±5 cm at a distance of 30 cm from the exciting and detecting coils. The positioning accuracy of our system is expected to be sufficient for detecting a tag buried 30 cm below the earth 's surface.
