A number of conventional group hearing aids have been produced. However, the problem with all of the conventional systems is that the direction of communication is one way, coming from the teacher to each student. A two way system in which the voice of a student is directly transmitted to other students (bypassing the teacher) has been in great demand. This is the very objective of the current study. We have developed a group hearing aid in a classroom of the school for the deaf in which the voice of a standing student is shared with each hearing-impaired student in the classroom.

There is an effort under way among universities and other educational institutions for opening their facilities to elementary and lower secondary school children so that they may experience manufacturing and machining. Their expectation is that holding open classes may give school children an opportunity to touch machine tools, arousing their interest in and developing understanding on manufacturing skills and technology. Having them use machine tools and CAD/CAM systems, however, requires man-to-man instructions, and it is difficult to enroll many participants. To solve this problem, simple CAD/CAM software was developed targeting at elementary and lower secondary school children. This paper describes how the software was used in a manufacturing class for parents and children and was verified for its effectiveness.

We have developed a computer assisted instruction (CAI) system that supports study of gear mechanisms by simulating 3-dimensional mechanism construction. In this study, we expanded the capability of the system by adding the blocks correspond to cam mechanisms. A plate cam, a heart cam, and a cylindrical cam were chosen for the implementation. The parameters for making cam mechanism blocks are restricted to the fundamental ones for learning. Since those parameters depend on the kind of cam, the kind is firstly selected for setting the mechanism on the system field. The function to display the cam diagram was also added to the system for convenience of understanding.

This paper describes a new virtual reality-based skill training, internship, and human resource development for undergraduate mechanical engineering students. The virtual reality-based skill training system is able to reproduce the environment of a casting and a lathe manufacturing technology. The most notable advantages of this system are that students can virtually experience the workflow prior to actually performing the practice at the worksite, one can learn about procedures beforehand. The industry collaboration and internship program provides support to make our educational programs more practical and concordant with the need of industry and global society. The internship gives students an opportunity to put into practice in the real world the skills and knowledge they have been developing in university classes. Our skill training allows the students to experience the perception of actually being in a particular environment.

The time has come to reflect on our civilization which has been blessed with convenient fossil fuels for the past 100years. Fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas have become limited resources. In addition, bad effects caused by excessive carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions have now begun destroying our global environment seriously. In this background, in 2005, we manufactured a practical Stirling engine using woody biomass fuels for the first time in Japan. Further we proposed a unique co-generation system with the Stirling engine that uses woody biomass fuels such as sawdust, firewood, and wood pellets. In this report, we introduce an educational challenge of environmental engineering using this Stirling engine. A unique system in which both heating/cooling and power generation are available can be constructed.

In this paper the author discusses the meaning of "ginou" in Japanese that is similar meaning to skill in English. The word "ginou" has been used for describing skill in many fields and jobs. The author has defined the word "gijutsu" in Japanese that is similar meaning to technique in English at the previous presentation of the same divisional meeting of the JSME. The definition by the author is that "gijutsu" is "the power and adaptability of the objective actions which have been customized through experiences before." The definition of "ginou" was that "the achievement ability against the objective actions which have been customized through experiences and training before." Also, the word "waza" in Japanese is defined that the achievement ability against the objective action. As summary the three categories of "gijutsu", "ginou", and "waza" are indicated by the composed figure which is showing elemental and systems flow.

In 2009 the author visited the Taman Mini Indonesia Indarh for investigating a unique railway system "Aeromovel". Aeromovel was invented by Oskar H.W. Coesterr, Brazilian aerospace engineer, and patented in 1980s. The propulsion principle of the railway system is similar as sailing ship: i.e., a plate in a pipe line is pushed by pressurized air. Aeromovel is a reversed type of the atmospheric railway of Isambard Kingdom Brunel which was propelled by vacuum pressure in the pipe line. Taman Mini Indonesia's Aeromovel has been running since 1989. In this paper, the author describes the detail of Aeromovel using its pictures and figures for showing design, structure, mechanism, and size and dimensions. Aeromovel and atmospheric railway system are eco-friendly transportation system and there are plans to install systems for airport access in Brazil and for sightseeing access in Japan.

We have developed a computer assisted instruction system for machine drawing. The system has a function to show the 3-dimensional (3-D) geometry made from the projection view of the object. In the case of including mistakes in the drawing, the incomplete geometry is presented on the display so that one can find mistakes without help from teachers. However, since the system employs wireframe models for 3-D description, it is often difficult to understand precise features. Therefore, the system was refined by employing surface models in this study. It was demonstrated that the visibility of the model is improved and the difference between the correct and the illegal model can be seen clearly by using the refind system. The results of the trial use shows that the system is effective for self-exercise.

By three-dimensional (3-D) CAD system being used rapidly, 3-D CAD system has been incorporated into the education. The design and drawing education by using 3-D CAD generally designs some parts, supports the ability to assemble the parts three-dimensionally. In that case, to check 3-D CAD data in detail, the teacher needs a lot of labors. Therefore, we have developed a system to check 3-D CAD data automatically. When the Check-Model (checked 3-D CAD data) is incorrect, it is necessary for a mechanism that checks the mistake. In order to check the mistake, the judgment of the agreement of three-dimensional shape assumed three conditions concerning the surface, "agreement of the number of surface", "agreement of the shape of surface", and "agreement of the direction of surface". This paper describes the Development of educational 3D-CAD check system.

There is no system which can do suitable guidance for the student's ability and can apply to various teaching materials. Therefore, we have developed a teaching material support system which can correspond to various teaching materials, and can learn for myself. In dividing the lecture method into the teaching material and the guidance procedure, this support system can be applied to various teaching materials only by constructing the content of the teaching material. On the other hand, by installing the mechanism which can understand student's ability, this support system can do suitable guidance for student's ability by the content of teaching material constructed according to ability. This paper describes an educational system for a lot of students by using this support system (CAI system).

It is very important for the user of a walking stick while walking to support their weight with the stability of the stick. So, for the improved convenience of the users, we have developed a new stick based on the principles of biomechanics. In this paper, the shape of the stick as decided by new design concepts is outlined, and we have manufactured for trial of the stick using an ultra-high speed 5-axis vertical machining center. It is clarified that the sticks of the trial production are able to reduce the load to knee while walking more than the usual stick. With these results in mind we explain why and how the new stick design is more effective.

Previously we reported the 3D-CAD educational system for mechanical design. In the present study we aim to develop a educational manufacturing system which can generate cutter paths and cutting conditions so as to obtain 3D-CAD data. To accomplish this, we constructed the FMS plant that can be seen through the window of the CAD/CAM room. The utilization of such integrated education system composed of information technology is very useful for students to study how to apply the 3D-CAD data to the manufacturing and the control of the machine. We introduced 'DIES' as the subject for the practical exercise of manufacturing. In this exercise students can learn the technical method how to design the products and manufacture the dies using 3D-CAD.
