Recently, some students have not interest in the design and manufacturing, even if they entered into the class of the mechanical engineering department. We wish the students show the interst in the producted mechanics and those design processes, and changed the caliculum of the introduction education of the mechanical engineering for the first grade (just entered) students in 2002. The new caliculum includes the practices/experiments of the introduction of mechanics and design. The name of the classes are Workshop1 and Workshop2. Workshop2 is carried out in second/autumn semester. This class has three major practices of (1) 3D solid modelling, (2) fablication of the light airplane and (3) Engineering design. I want to introduce the educations of Workshop2 class in this paper.

Leonardo da Vinci is not only famous as the artist who painted master pieces such as "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa", he is also a great scientist and engineer. He left records of many original scientific inventions and explorations in books now known as Leonardo's Codices. These codices include anatomical charts, mechanical equipment, civil engineering concepts, and drawings related to architecture, astronomy, botany, and so on. The contents of these Codices are interesting for beginners who are studying mechanical engineering, although beginners are not used to recognizing a solid from a drawing. Therefore, models were reconstructed from the drawings in these codices, to be used as teaching materials for the study of mechanical engineering. In a lecture as part of a mechanics course, it was possible to generate an interest in mechanical engineering among beginners who studied the mechanics by using the reconstructed models. Similarly, an opportunity to consider the field of mechanical engineering was given to students of primary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools, and their parents, by the reconstructed models presented in the DA VINCI Festival at Toyama Prefectural University.

It's partly because it has long been thought that the technologies for producing entertainment can't be reused and unfit for reseach subject of research in engineering field. But recent years, many department or course specializing in entertainment techenology was established and it is also scheduled. Besides, the technique for producing 3DCG animation could reuse, because technical resources account for a larger proportion of 3DCG animation. This study clarify what the science and technology field should do.

The environment where Japanese industry has been paid with respect is changing tremendously due to the globalization of economics, where Asian countries are undergoing economical and technical development as well as advancing in information technology. For example, in the design of custom-made casting product, a designer whom lacking of casting knowledge may not be able to produce a good design. In order to obtain a good design and manufacturing result, it is necessary to equip the designer and manufacturer with a support system related to casting design or so called, knowledge transfer and creation system. This paper proposes a new virtual reality based knowledge acquisition and job training system for casting design, which is composed of the explicit and tacit knowledge transfer system using synchronized multimedia and the knowledge internalization system using immersive virtual environment. In our proposed system, the education content is displayed in the immersive virtual environment, where by a trainer and trainee may experience in the virtual site operations together. Sharing the content with the trainer who has a master of casting technique, the trainee has gained explicit and tacit knowledge of casting through the multimedia-based knowledge transfer system, the immersive virtual environment catalyzes the internalization of knowledge and also enable the trainee to gain tacit knowledge before undergoing on the job training at real operation site.

In recent years, knowledge transfer has gained attention in our country for it is vital to preserve the skills of the experts. Skill is considered as tacit knowledge, and when the expert conveys his skill, he normally uses words as medium. Since words is one of the explicit knowledge, it is thought that linguistic expression may vary corresponding to the skill level. In this paper, by studying the relation between proximal term and distal term of tacit knowledge, and from the definition that tacit knowledge is a series of acts, we have concluded that the words used to express tacit knowledge would be better to include the movements of parts near human body. In order to verify the above, we have studied the changes in linguistic expressions corresponding to various skill levels of Aikido, a kind of Japanese traditional martial art.

Recently, as the technologies surrounding Mechanical Engineering has improved remarkably, the expectation of students graduated from department of mechanical engineering too has changed a lot. For example, in order to develop a Mechatronics system, student needs to integrate wide varieties of technology, such as mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, and information technology. Therefore, from the perspective of education, past education system which stress on expertising each technology should be replaced by an education system that stress on integrating multidisciplinary knowledge. In this paper, a trial education program for students of department of mechanical engineering in our university is described, where by students are required to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge in order to develop a biologically-based robot. And finally the effect of the program is studied and reported in this paper.

A feeling of unease exists about the current attitudes (moral) of young designers towards their job. These situations are observed in most workplaces, regardless of the size of the company. To enable these new designers to acquire the necessary attitudes in the design division, systematic education regarding an understanding of the work and the principles and rules for carrying out the work is required. A policy of investigating and thinking for oneself and encouraging a lifelong education in design is required for the conveyance of skills. For the development of industries and the ongoing improvement of our daily life, continual creation of new design solutions using innovative skills is necessary.

The introduction of new 3-dimensional CAD system is discussed in this school. Especially, the selection of 3-dimensional CAD system relates to not only design and drafting education but also machining and analysis education. Therefore, 3-dimensional CAD system cannot be easily decided. Moreover, the teaching materials of 3-dimensional CAD also have the problem. In addition, the difference of student's ability level is an important problem. To solve such problems, we have developed a teaching material of 3-dimensional CAD for education by using HTML format (animation technique). Because HTML format can link animation with the voice, the student can understand CAD operation easily. By the introduction of new 3-dimensional CAD system and the request of CAD venders, we decided the development of 3-dimensional CAD "CATIA" by using animation technique. This paper describes the problems in the development and the solutions.

Authors discovered wheel ruts in Cyrene, Sabratha, Leptis Magna which were city remains of the Roman Empire of north Africa till now. Recently, authors did an on-the-spot survey of Timgad that was city remains of Roman Empire. Timgad is situated in the north foot of Ores mountains of Algeria in the northern Africa. Timgad was reconstructed as a colonization city in about AD 100 by Roman Emperor Trajanus. The town was called "Pompeii of northern Africa". But unfortunately, it was destroyed in the seventh century by extension of Islamic power. Excavation of the ruins began in 1881. The triumphal arch of Trajanus, a sacred place or courthouse "Basilica", great public bathhouses, an outdoor theater of 3500 seats, public square "Forum" and drainage facilities were excavated from sand. Authors discovered that carvings of wheel ruts are remained at main streets of east and west "Decumanus Maximo" or main street of north and south "Cardo" of the town. The result of measurements are reported in this paper.
