The working model of Brunel's atmospheric railway was made and demonstrated at a museum event and a university festival event. The atmospheric railway was worked in England for a half year in 1848. The system of the railway is interested in due to very simple principal but the mechanism is complicated. The working model is, therefore, good for us because of understanding the principal and mechanism through hand-made work. In the events, children, also adults, well enjoyed watching and playing with the working model. In the present report we summarized the detail of the model, such as materials, sizes and shapes, parts, performances, problems, and further tasks for application.

The atmospheric railway was an environment-friendly railway in the 19^<th> century directed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) in England. The railway could run as no-noise, no smoke, no spew, and no slip on the line, by driving force generated from the pressure difference between the front and rear of the piston. This principle, named atmospheric or pneumatic system was applied in Kingstown in Ireland, London, Parris, New York, etc. In this paper, some examples of such applications have been surveyed through references about atmospheric and pneumatic railway systems. This aims to study and design the practical system in Japan and to familiarize the railway to Japanese.

Up to the present, authors have sometimes researched in the field for chain conveyor water scoop wheel with rectangular plates remained in People's republic of China. At that time, each dimension of the parts of the water wheel was measured. In the mechanical engineering field, the unit of the length is used "millimeter" with no declaration. However, it flashed by chance when drawing was performed from the measurement value. Parts are sure to be made from the unit of "里・丈・尺・寸・分・厘・毫" from which use is prohibited now if it is a sphere of the culture of the Chinese character. Then, authors analogized the unit of length in manufacturing standards from the measurement values of the parts of the water wheel.

This paper describes a new point of view for the environment and energy education that is the important task to teach the urgent and serious issue of the global warming. The key context of this paper is to introduce the tacit knowledge into the environment and energy education also with explicit knowledge. The tacit knowledge, in this field, is a private and social custom to behave alert and agile based on environment friendly mind. The teachers should introduce their class to educate such custom and sense through experiences in the natural environment and field works. The simply way to behave like environment friendly is to say "mottainai" and act with a sense of "mottainai".

We have developed a computer assisted instruction (CAI) system for simulating 3-dimensional mechanism construction. In this study, the system was applied to out-of-class learning of gear mechanisms. Fundamental questions and exercises on gear mechanism construction were delivered to students who take the class in machine mechanism design as the contents of the Leaning Management System (LMS). Since few students dropped out in exercises of mechanism construction, the system seems to be useful for out-of-class learning. And, the analysis of the access logs obtained from the LMS reveals that there are four typical learning styles among the students. The analysis of the logs also suggests that the system with simple user interface to construct mechanism is recommended to some students. Additionally, answers to the questionnaire indicate that the system is effective for students to improve motivation for studying and understanding of gear mechanism.

We have conducted to develop the computer assisted instruction system which provides an e-Learning environment for drawing practice. In this study, we propose two functions of the system to find out mistakes on the projection view without the help of teachers. The first function realizes that the system generates 3-dimensional object based on the projections drawn by the learner. In the case of the incorrect projections, such as lack of lines, mismatch between each view, etc., are provided, the unnatural shaped object is shown on the display so that the learner can easily understand one's mistakes in projection. The second function is used for checking the line type on the projections. This function informs the learner about the mistake of hidden outline by using the 3-D object with colored lines. The prototype system was developed and examples of execution were demonstrated.

In recent years, economic globalization, shortening of product development period, diversification of consumer taste, etc. are remarkable. The above severe environment, small and medium-sized enterprises on the manufacturing industry have many difficulties. Although it is said for product differentiation or branding that applying of a strategic design approach is effective, in small and medium-sized enterprises, the strategic design approach is not applied enough. Then, we maintain the apparatus used for the strategic design approach such as goods plan, machine design, trial production, product evaluation, and sales promotion, etc. Using these apparatus, we have begun the design support to the small and medium-sized enterprises since 2006, and the place is called Design Center in TIRI (Tokyo Metroporitan Industial Technology Research Institute). In this paper, we describe the directionality of design use method and the support service of Design Center, based on the report concerning the design use of Tokyo and national government.

Among small and medium-sized companies, it is considered essential to activate the basic manufacturing industry supporting the advanced technologies of major, companies (supporting industry). For this activation, reliance on skills is not enough; it is also necessary to develop unique technologies of high novelty based on the latest scientific knowledge by making effective use of existing technologies available to small and medium-sized companies. We consider that the key to this activation is the cultivation of new human resources. The Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology (TMCIT) is located in the heart of the Keihin Industrial Area, where many small and medium-sized companies are integrated. By assuming future production based on digitization, the Production Systems Engineering Department of TMCIT adopted 3D CAD for design education from the beginning, and has been promoting an education system of digital production using these databases. With the consideration that the advanced facilities at TMCIT will contribute to local small and medium-sized companies, we have been cultivating new engineering talent for these companies since 2006. This report will introduce the content and effect of this education.
