    A purified cell wall fraction of certain mycobacterial strains was found to possess hemolytic activity. Hemolysis-positive mycobacteria exhibited their activity only after the cells were disrupted and treated with trypsin. The active principle was resistant to heating at 121C for 15 minutes, resistant to trypsin treatment, and sedimented with the cell wall fraction by centrifugation at 10, 000×G for one hour. It could not be solubilized in water after vigorous homogenization or treatment with Tween 80. The activity was partially reduced by lipase treatment and it disappeared from the cell wall after KOH-alcohol treatment. The influence of media was also investigated.
    From the above characteristics, the active principle was speculated to be a kind of surface-active substance tightly bound to the cell wall or making a constitutive part of the cell wall. M. kansasii and certain strains of rapidly growing mycobacteria were proved to be highly active in the simple hemolysis reaction.

    1. An intraperitoneal injection of 35S-labeled, heat-killed tubercle bacilli with paraffin oil as adjuvant caused a continuous maintainance of radioactivity in the spleen, suggesting that bacterial constituents accumulated in the spleen cells. This maintainance seems to be related to the adjuvant effect of paraffin oil.
    2. The spleen and lung reacted differently in respect to the appearance and maintainance of radioactivity.
    3. Radioactivity from 35S was found to a large extent in the protein fraction or in the cytoplasmic fraction of mouse organs. It was also shown that the spleen has a stronger radioactivity in the mitochondrial fraction than the liver.
    4. When 35S was added to the culture medium as a sulfate, it was mostly incorporated into the protein as sulfur-containing amino acids (methionine and cystine).
    5. It is suggested that the use of 35S-labeled tubercle bacilli are useful for the study of tuberculosis because of the high incorporation of the radioactive sulfur into the protein and its long half-decay period.

    Antigenic analyses of Hansenula holstii and Hansenula matritensis were carried out by the slide agglutination method using monospecific or absorbed antisera, and the antigenic structures of these species were confirmed by reciprocal and successive absorptions and slide agglutination tests. H. holstii possesses thermostable antigens 1, 2, 3, 13, 14 and 15, but no thermolabile antigens. H. matritensis has thermostable antigens 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 and 14, while no thermolabile antigen. It is the perfect form of Torulopsis globosa.
    In comparative studies, the antigenic structures of several strains of various species within the genera Hansenula and Candida corresponded with each of the antigenic structures of species used for antigenic analyses. Therefore, the antigenic structures of the species in the genus Hensenula can serve in the classification of the genus.

    A population study was made on the Japanese from Kumamoto, Western Japan, for the factors of the Gm and Inv systems. The data obtained were strikingly similar to those of Ropartz et al., who have studied the population from Tokyo, Eastern Japan. Steinberg's assumption of a Gmab allele in the Japanese has also been supported by the present investigation.
