    After introducing the organization of Electric Communication Laboratories of NTT recommended by the specialist of Bell Telephone Laboratories of AT&T just after the Second World War, the importantness of the department of system development is discussed. It is because of that the job of the department is to predict the future direction of communication system and specify the function of various products needed for the system.

    The products in 21st century would be mostly very compliated systems including both hardware parts and software parts. The software include pattern recognition like human being is needed in the information century. The writer thinks the MTS (Mahalanobis-Taguchi-Schmidt method) takes vital role for pattern recognition technology using a set of multi-densional information available from the system.

    The heat generating materials used for body warmers consist of iron powder,activated charcoal, water, salt and water retainer. These materials are packed in an air-permeable inner bag, which is further enclosed in the airtight outer bag. Recently, the demand for such body warmers has been rapidly increasing because of their convenience. But when the ambient temperature at which a body warmer is used changes, the user may feel too warm or too cold. The user feels warm when entering a heated room or feels cold when going outside. This is because the temperature generated by the body warmer varies depending on the environmental temperature. In this report, the generic function used in the previous report was reviewed and recalculation was made using a newly estab lished generic function. As a result, the significant control factors affecting the heat of body warmers were found to be iron powder, air permeability and the amount of brine. The condition with a large SN ratio showed a steady heat gen erating characteristic at low temperature.

    The DC micro motors with iron cores tend to generate torque unevenness during rotation. Such unevenness, caused by the relative angle positions between iron cores and magnet during rotation, not only causes transmitting torque variation but also creates vibration and mechanical noise. At the motors R & D(Research and Development), the reduction of the torque unevenness is as much importance as the miniaturization, the efficiency improvement.

    In this experiment, the basic function was defined that the generated torque is proportional tocurrent. Then, dynamic characteristic was used for quality evaluation. It was appropriate that the obtained optimum condition was almost agreed with the existing engineering ㎞owledge. Concretely, the torque constant was changed to minus 1% and the torque unevenness was reduced to minus 78%. This experiment was our first application of quality engineering. However, in addition to the above results, we knew that quality engineering is the appreciable methods that is shown with the numerical value(S/N ratio) and graph(factor effect figure). Furthermore, knowledge of the confirmation(loss function)of economical loss was very significant.

    The objective of this study was to improve a machining process for the production of difficult-to-cut materials which are used for aircraft engine component parts. The study was conducted in 1995 when our company started to introduce quality engineering methods. Relying on the technology existed before study, it was almost impossible to machine such materials.

    A three stage experimentation was conducted to study the vibrating machining method, new tool types, water soluble cutting oil and machining ability by observing power consumption. As a result, the optimum drilling condition was found and the efficiency was improved five times, giving our company a good start to apply quality engineering methods.
