The under water illumination of lake water is measured with a Matsuda photoelectric tube on Lake Biwa off the City of Otsu. For the convenience of treating the results of measurement, the under water illumination is approximately represented by a function consisting of two exponential functions of depth, each of which has a different absorption coefficient respectively. By this method, it becomes evident that the influence of rainfall appears in the larger absorption coefficient and the smaller absorption coefficient varies with the change of transparency. The behavior of the under water illumination. after the typhoon No. 13 is discussed.

The waters of the mountain lakes in the non-vegetated rocky region of Mt. Norikura (about 2, 700-2, 800 m above sea level) have the composition in chemical constituents similar to atmospheric precipitations just like as in the ponds situated on the Ozegahara moor. The evaporation residue is about 10 mg/l in general and the soluble state silicon content is so small-less than 0.3 mg/l generally-that as the weathering effect by precipitations has not yet appeared. But the water of Lake Ohniuike in the forest region at about 2, 400 m above sea level indicates that there is remarkable influence of weathering action. The soluble state silicon content has increased up to 3.9 m/1, and the evaporation residue and the sulphate ion content have become 3-4 times greater ; K/Na. ratio has decreased, while Ca/Mg ratio has increased. It will be known from these values that the nature of the waters approached to that of the water of the River Jintsu at Toyama City. The river system of the slope of Mt. Norikura where there are situated the lakes mentioned in this paper belongs to the Jintsu River.

    1. This paper is a result of the survey which has been done in two torrents on Mt. Eboshi, Nagano Prefecture, in the years 1952-53, on the aquatic insect fauna and its productive potentials.
    2. The productivity of the River Kakuma is greater than that of the River Kanabara when compared with each other at the same altitude.
    3. The difference between two rivers under consideration seems to be caused by the qualitative structure of the rocks which constitute the substrata.
    4. The productive potentials measured by dry weights of animals per unit area of the river bottom are graded as 6 : 2 : 2 : 1.5, concerning Trichoptera, Diptera, Tricladida, Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera.
