From summer to autumn the circulation of lake water stops for a time and there grow certain layers of varying density within one hundred thousandth at constant temperature except near the bottom. I have investigated for the past two years with respect to the vertical distribution of density on the lakes of Kizaki, Aoki and Nojiri; using a standard hydrometer of sensitivity about 3×10
-6. The following results were obtained.
1) Three types of layers are usually seen according to depth, i. e., surface, intermediate and bottom layers,
2) Intermediate layer seems to be caused by plankton or their dead remains. Both the consumption of potassium permanganate and the viscosity of the water show a good accordance with the density.
3) There are movement and transformations in the intermediate layer.
4) In the bottom layer, the quantitative analysis of iron as well as the measurement of density have been carried out.
