The status of religion in Japan is far lower than in most countries, including Western societies. The majority of Japanese people regard themselves as having no paticular religious belief, and try to keep a distance from religious enthusiasm, while only a small number of people are activists. However, in reality, Japanese society is based on a unique religious tradition with rich and colorful religious experiences. Therefore, studies of religion in Japan should focus on such religious experiences as a whole, instead of each minor religion of little importance. It is of great importance that a hybridization of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Japanese studies took place in the premodern period, under the government of the warrior class, which facilitated the building of the Japanese people as a nation. It is highly incumbent on studies of religion in Japan to give a full and universal explanation of such particular religious characteristics of Japanese society in the global context.

The general role of (academic) "studies" in society may be to point out the problems of contemporary society, to draw the figure of an ideal society, and to propose ways towards a solution of their problems. On the other hand, the role of religious studies in modern society must be illuminated by the most important problems in society. What, then, are these most important problems in modern society? I think one of them is the problem of "sustainability." This includes not only the problem of environmental issues, but also the problems of depressing or dominating developing countries by some large advanced nations that freely use science and technology for their own purposes. The root of this problem must be finally based on the overestimation of human rationality that acts to divide beings objectively. In contrast, the world view or the view of human beings of religions often expresses the transcendental Being or a relational standpoint concerning the world. They offer the image of an original human society that will overcome the various distortions in modern society. Religious studies must be able to provide many suggestions to society or people by clarifying the fundamental design of society precisely for solving the problems of modern society. I think this is one of the most important roles of religious studies in modern society.

The aim of this essay is to argue the potential contribution that Religious Studies could make towards the co-existence with "the other." The other, othering, or otherness, is one of the main problems that modern society faces. "The other" in this case is examined as one which "seduces" us, and emphasis is placed on the peculiar nature of "seduction." To begin with, I would like to point out that "to seduce" is a verb which results in or calls for the reversal of the active nature of the one who seduces and the passive nature of the one who is being seduced. Furthermore, this reversal does not simply happen once, but continues as an inter-conversion of the self and the other. The seducer becomes the seduced to create a feeling of togetherness or union. Next, the body plays an important role in the act of seduction. Seduction is first and foremost physical in nature and therefore contingent. Seduction ultimately opens a way to the world of the erotic. By focusing on seduction and the erotic it leads to, I would like to examine its potential within the scope of interaction with others. I also simultaneously point out the significance of seduction and the erotic in Religious Studies in that they may overcome Orientalism, widen the scope of Religious Studies on embodiment and sexuality, and finally shed new light on the concept of belief or faith from a different perspective.

"Shukyo bunkashi" (specialists in religious culture [or religion and culture]) is a new qualification system for undergraduates being planned by JARS. It aims to qualify students who demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of worldwide religious traditions. A "shukyo bunkashi" is expected to be engaged in various occupations that require knowledge in different cultures. On the other hand, the Japanese Ministry of Education has been attempting to introduce an academic review system of subjects to higher education institutions. These two systems suggest an increased awareness that the academic study of religion, not only as "applied science" but also as "plain science," should play a social role and be recognized as worthwhile by the public. We, the members of JARS, are encouraged to work together to establish education assessment panels and also to achieve accountability. Would we be able to fulfill our social responsibilities without jeopardizing the independence and the autonomy of the academy? This paper explains both qualification systems by comparing and contrasting them with each other and then discusses their problems. As an example of a precedent, it will refer to the benchmarking guidelines for theology and religious studies in UK universities and analyzes their possible liaison with governmental policies.
